Subject: Keyword searches of archived files

Hello everyone!
One of our members asked me if the archived messages
for our list can be searched by keyword. This was
actually quite a good question and I thought I'd
share the answer with all of you.
No.
However, Larry Stephens is in the process of trying
to set up this service for the mailing lists. I'll
let you know when it is ready.
In the meantime, I may have a temporary solution.
I have saved pretty well all the messages posted to
the list. There were one or two, like the unsubscribe
mistakes, that I have deleted. That said, I automatically
do a keyword search of all the messages on my computer
each time I am contacted by a new member, or if a query is
posted, so as to locate anything of interest to them. I
usually search for their early ancestors.
Now, I am willing to search my messages for any of you at
anytime. Thus, if someone wants copies of messages
relating to say "Bath County" send me a message to the
effect of:
Please send me references in the archived messages to "Bath County."
I will reply with filenames that messages with the keyword
"Bath County" were posted so you can retreive the messages
from the archives. I prefer to this like this because
sending you the actual messages will significantly
increase my online costs.
That said, there was a period where the maiser server
did not archive messages because of a program error. At
some point in the near future, I will set everyone to
nomail and repost these messages so they can be archived.
I will then reset everyone back to mail. Thus, I will
also notify everyone ahead of time so that nobody
tries to send a post on that day.
So if you want me to do a keyword search, let me know.
I may be slow in responding as I might get a number of
messages about this.
See ya..
