Dear Dan:

I don't want to overdo the criticism of Larry Shuck's book. He does a
valuable service by trying to link together all the Kincaid lines but I
think he struggled with the earliest generations just like we all have & he
made mistakes.

He has 1st generation James Kincaid with second generation Alexander, David,
William, and Thomas. David (b. 1680) is said to have fled the 1715
rebellion which ties in with the David legend which has come down through
other sources.

David is said to have children 3rd generation : David (married to Winifred
Hobson), John the weaver (married to Elizabeth), Joseph of Albemarle, poss
Borough Kincaid of Albemarle, Elizabeth Kincaid, Hobson Kincaid, and poss.
James of Albemarle.

I believe this is speculation on his part that here were two Davids. One
problem with the David legend is that it has him born in 1680 in Scotland
(because his supposed father died about that time) but then he lives until
1779 (if he is the same one who married Winifred) which is not impossible
but seems unlikely especially as he married Winifred abt. 1729 and had the
children thereafter. Of course he could have had an earlier marriage or
there might be two Davids but there is no proof for this. In addition, even
if you accept the two Davids theory, Larry has those whom we know to be the
children of David/Winifred (per his will) as being the children of David,
Sr.
in addition, the children of David Sr. are also supposed to be those "loose"
(unattached) Kincaids in Albemarle, James & Joseph.

Maybe there were two Davids but there is just no evidence that I know of. I
believe that David did have brothers James & Joseph of Albemarle and
possibly John the weaver but that is speculation on my part.

The supposed brother of David Sr. in Larry''s account, Thomas was the one
married to Margaret and died in 1750 in Augusta. Larry has as his children
3rd generation: William, prob. Thomas married to Hannah Tincher, John
married to Ann Graham, Andrew married to Mary.

My criticism of this is that only one son of the above Thomas, William is
know for certain. The supposed son Thomas, married to Hannah Tincher, is
incorrect because he is my ancestor and I know he was the son of John
Kincaid (perhaps the weaver). Susan believes the above Andrew is also
probably son of John the weaver.

The fourth generations and forward in Larry's book more concern the Kincaids
who went to WVA and that is Larry's area of expertise, since he has
abstracted in book form much Greenbrier vital statistic information. So
that is where his information is more valuable and apparently more valid.

One failing of his book is the lack of documentation. But the fact that he
even tackled the Kincaid genealogy has value in itself. If he had the
information on the will of David Kincaid (which he did not) he could have
avoided many errors.

Larry did not list Jean as a daughter of David Kincaid. Nor is she
mentioned in David's will. But I have seen in many accounts that she is his
daughter - I'll look throgh my other info. & see if there is anything that
helps.
