Richard,

This is in reply to your message concerning Jean and Isabella Kincaid
(reported to be the daughters of the David Kincaid who married Winnifred
Hobson Tillary). I wish there was a simple answer to your question
concerning their ages and dates of marriage. Unfortunately, there isn't so I
am sending you this long message of speculation instead!

It is important to mention that I have never seen any verified documentation
that there even was a Jean and Isabella Kincaid. Every book that refers to
them, and that includes writers such as George Cleek, George Diehl, and Jesse
Gwin, do not include any documented source references. Having said that it
has generally been accepted that they did exist based on circumstantial
evidence.

First, I will look at the supposed marriage of James Lockridge to Isabella
Kincaid. Robert Walters, who researches the Lockridge family, published a
manuscript where he talks about this problem. Bob says that there are deed
records for James Lockridge and his wife Isabella, but Bob notes that it
doesn't indicate that this Isabella was a Kincaid. He speculates that a
marriage between James and Isabella would have taken place sometime before
1721 because that was when James Lockridge II was born. Thus this Isabella
would have been born early in the 1700s. Of course, James also could have had
a prior marriage and Isabella could have been a second or later wife.
Assuming James Lockridge II is Isabella Kincaid's son, she obviously cannot be
a daughter of Winifred Hobson Tillary Kincaid.

Now, concerning the supposed marriage of Robert Gwin and Jean Kincaid, I have
not seen any documentation that even mentions the wife of Robert. If he did
marry a Jean Kincaid it would probably have been before 1741/42 which is the
generally accepted date of the birth of Capt. David Gwin. This would indicate
that a Jean Kincaid would have been born in the early 1720s, again too early
to be a daughter of Winifred Hobson Tillary Kincaid. It is not surprising
that a marriage record would not exist for Robert Gwin because Orange County
was just being organized in the 1740s and record keeping was poor to non-
existent.

It is almost certain that there was some type of relationship between David
Kincaid and James Lockridge and Robert Gwin because David is a witness on some
of their land purchases. There is also a court case where Nell Gwin is
mentioned in a case involving a theft of silver plate from David and Winifred
Kincaid by Katrin Queen. This Nell is reported to be Robert and Jean's
daughter--thus David's grandaughter.

There was also supposed to be a David Kincaid, Jr. who would probably also not
be a son of Winifred Hobson. I have found militia records that refer to a
David Kincaid, Jr. As I recall, neither David, Jr., Isabella, or Jean are
mentioned in David Kincaid's will. It appears that all of the children he
mentions are his by Winifred.

I am also copying this message to the Gwin and Hump Mountain lists. I invite
comments from anyone who is having as much trouble with this as me!

Thanks! Ron Gwinn
