To finish out the geography of the region a look at the other river systems is in order. Not only does this help to orient but also points out how intermeshed the headwaters of the great Eastern Rivers are. From PA to LA, from VA to MO, one can travel from one system to another relatively quickly. This undoubtedly aided in the swift progression of settlement. An atlas would help.

The Little Calfpasture is separated from the Great Valley by the Little North Mt. The Middle River of the Shenandoah sources near this Mt. in the Riverhead District of Augusta Co. Walker Creek sources near the Middle River source but flows south along the eastern base of the Little North Mt. It joins the Maury River (which begins where the two Calfpastures meet at the western base of the Mt.). A little east of Walker Creek, Moffets Creek sources, flows south into Hays Creek, then enters the Maury a little east of Walker Creek. The first of 2 Cedar Creeks in the area enters a little east of there. The Maury, flowing east, passes just north of Lexington, turns south, picks up another Buffalo Creek and enters the James near Natural Bridge. Here is the second Cedar Creek. It flows under Natural Bridge. At the same latitude as Natural Bridge and at a little east of the longitude for Clifton Ford, lies the town of Salisbury. Catawba Creek flows into the James from the south at thi!
s point. Remember that the Cowpasture joins the James near Clifton Ford and the Jackson joins it west of that point. The James flows east picking up the rivers that drain Alb. Co. and enters the Chesapeake Bay near its mouth to the Atlantic.

The next system to the south has only a token presence in the Great Valley near the city of Roanoke. The river is variously called the Staunton and the Roanoke. It flows east.

With head waters reaching almost to the James drainage on the north and the Holston drainage on the south, the New River drains the southern end of the valley. It flows northwest past Monroe Co., WVA picking up Indian Creek, then the Greenbrier. It joins the Great Kenawa which flows into the Ohio.

The Holston River is a part of the Tennessee River drainage. This covers Washington Co. VA, Campbell Co. TN and surrounding areas. The Tennessee dips into Alabama and enters the Mississippi on Kentucky's western border.

Hopefully, this covers all geographic orientation we will need. topozone.com can give you a sense of the topography. Sue....
