This is a wonderful site to help you find counties anywhere in the US. It
gives you the MODERN county name for any city still in existence:

www.mit.edu:8001/geo

I get better results if I type in just the CITY and not the state.

To find the county for a ghost town - go to www.google.com
On the advanced search option - put ghost towns on the first line and the
name of the state on the exact phrase line (if the state has two words - New
Mexico, New York, etc.) Try this with New Mexico.
