Jonathan,

No, you shouldn't have to buy them all. The way it worked in the old days when I was getting them for $5.00, it was all done by mail.

I got free forms, which I filled out as much information on them as possible. I added any identifying info I had that wasn't ask for.

I sent them back and they checked their records and if they found what they thought was a match they told me how much the file would cost. This was after I started asking for the entire file. When I was just after the $5.00 amount, they would say they thought they found a match and they would send it when they received my check for their fee.

Now I have to admit, this sometimes depends if you get a decent researcher. I did receive the wrong files a couple of times. I've never been able to tie them into the family any where yet.

I don't understand how his son was left his Civil War pension unless he was a minor at the time. The pension rights were not something that could be left, to the best of my knowledge.

The information that you know and place on the order form should weed out the ones that can not be yours. You should include any given or surnames he was known to use. Some of them are under their initials.

I think if you'll check the site you can click on the links with the name and the regiment they may explain a bit more about each individual.

It may turn out none of these names are the right one to match your request and it will not cost anything to find that out, anyway I don't think it does.

It may turn out they have something that is not on this site yet, that does match.

Maybe someone on the Mailing List will have more up to date information and will help you also.

Orlena
