with the MARAIS DES CYGNES MASSACRE which occurred on May 19, 1858. A band
of ruffians led by Charles Hamilton traveled from Missouri into Kansas
rounding up neighbors and acquaintances. The band of pro-slavers road on
horseback marching their hostages to a ravine one mile from the Missouri
line. On Hamilton's order, the proslavers, still on horseback, took aim at
their neighbors. Amazingly, six survived the ordeal.
John Brown, arriving at the scene toward the end of June, built a 'fort'
some 220 yards south of the ravine.

There is much more to the story if you are interested. The place is now a
park owned by the state who wants to turn it over to Linn County.
