Hi,
I have the 1890 census of Chicksaw Nation, Indian Territory, Book 2 - Pickens
County, Joyce A. Rex, McClain County Historical and Genealogical Society. It
has entries for Pauls Valley. In it are several Crawfords: There are 2 which
seem to be appropriate to your family, living next to each other:
# 69450, which reads:
"Crawford, ? N. & Wife; Age 31, (Children -Sex number)1 (male), 2 (female), PV
(which means Pauls Valley), USC (US Citizen as opposed to Indian Nation
Citizen), PERM (has a permit to be in the Indian Territory as opposed to those
who were intruders), Wife age=22, Total # in family 5"
#69460, which reads:
"Crawford, ? S. & Wife; Age 52, PV, USC/PERM, WIFE AGE=50, Total 2
In addition to those two, there are also in Pauls Valley:
#67310, which reads:
"Crawford, ? V.; Age 35, 1, 2, PV, US CITZ, PERMIT (Apparently no wife); Total
4"
#66110, which reads:
"Crawford, J & Wife; Age 24, PV, USC/PERM WIFE AGE=18, Total 2"
#66250 (Lives not too far away from the one immediately above), which reads:
Crawford, J. R. & Wife; Age 40, 2, 1, PV, USC/PER, WIFE AGE=40, Total 5"
There's also a Lon Crawford in Marshall County with no permit, a Dick Crawford
in Lynn/Linn/Leon (?), age 22, a Frank in Beef Creek, Garvin County, a J. D.,
age 26 and Wife, in Ardmore, Carter County, who apparently has a permit, a J. M
. & wife, age 59, in Ardmore, apparently with a permit, another one, J. P. &
wife, an intruder, in Burneyville, Love County.
Your folks had been here long enough to have permits and probably the ones who
do not (above) are newcomers and may be related, but are not the children of
Willis Sullivan Crawford. Even though the age is off for "?. S.", I would
imagine that is your relative. I have a fairly identifiable relative in this
book who was a Doctor. He's listed as a physician, has the right surname and
initials and we know he was there in 1890, but his age is younger by about 20
years. We believe someone in the family probably gave the information who
didn't really know how old he was (perhaps his very new third wife).
There is not any additional information in this book about children's or wives'
names. What you have is what there is. It is not like the regular 1890
federal census!!! You might want to check it at your library. Good luck,
