Hello,
I'm trying to find a census record for a woman named Phoebe M. (or Phebe M., according to her obituary spelling of her name), whose
last name I don't know. She was born sometime between1863 and 1865, somewhere in Kansas (according to a 1902 Everett, Washington, obituary I found on her, though some census records say she was born in Arkansas, but I can't find her in any Arkansas records), and she married a Homer Gray, of Shell Knob (Barry County), Missouri (southwestern part of state), who was born in 1861. I don't know her parents' name nor birthplaces. Phoebe M. and Homer probably married around 1880. Their first child was born in Texas in 1883. I'm sorry I don't have more info. I thought maybe Phoebe M. was an unusual enough first name that she might possibly be found in a census with only
that amount of information about her? She named her children Daisy Phoebe, Guy,
Gertrude, Luther, Precious, Newton and Jennie. The second two were born in
Missouri in 1885 and 1888, and the last 3 were born in Oregon from 1889
on. They are all listed in a genetic database someone sent me, and her husband Homer appears to have been a preacher of some kind. Phoebe M. was only 37 when she died. It is possible she might be the Cherokee ancestor we have heard about, and maybe Phoebe M. was a made-up name. I am wondering whether her middle name might have been "Marguerite," since she named her child "Daisy."
Thanks in advance,
Simone Smith
