Ruth Jane PAYNE was born in Barbersville, Ohio, in the year 1842. Ruth was a daughter of Jesse and Lucinda Payne. In her fourteenth year she moved with her parents to Iowa, where she grew to young womanhood and was united in marriage to Monteville MURPHY in the year 1860.
In the year 1863, with two small children, she and her husband came to the new state of Kansas arriving in Lawrence at the time of the Quantrell Raid on that city. That raid so fired Mr. Murphy that he joined the army and served to the end of the war, leaving his young wife to bear the burdens of a pioneer life alone.
They came to Harper in the days when the town was new and their children have grown to manhood and womanhood.
Mrs. Murphy was an earnest and faithful member of the M.E. church and a consecrated Christian who loved her Master.
Her husband preceded her to the beyond, ten years ago and she has since lived alone except for some member of the family, who have been with her at various times since.
She has been in failing health for several months, but death did not come until Saturday, Jan. 31.
The funeral services were conducted at the M.E. church, Monday afternoon by her pastor, D.W. Von Schrilitz, assisted by Rev. Kelly, and she was laid to rest in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.
Mrs. Murphy was the mother of nine children, eight of whom survive her, one daughter, Frances, dying in infancy. All of her children were with her when she passed away.
The sons and daughters, who remain to mourn her going are: Jessie, Peter, Mrs. Elizabeth LEBRECHT, of Kansa City, Mrs. Minnie WRIGHT of Kansas City, Mrs. Emma JOHNSON of Kaw City, Okla., Mrs. Rhoda FELLRATH, Ezra and Milton Murphy of Woodard, Okla. She also leaves thirty-five grand children and seventeen great-grandchildren.
A little less than a month ago her brother Jesse Payne preceeded her to the other world.
Her brother, W.S. Payne and son, Ollie of Blackwell was here to attend the funeral.
