Subject: [KS-FOOT] Death: Sherman CRAIG and son shot by Steven PROSSIT; 1891
Date: Mon, 2 Jun 2008 02:40:14 EDT
A shooting affray recently occurred in Rooks county which resulted in the
death of Sherman CRAIG and his son. CRAIG had lived on a piece of government
land for thirteen years, but made no attempt to perfect his title by paying for
it. Steven PROSSIT jumped the claim and was building a house. CRAIG and his
son ordered him off and threatened to kill him unless he complied. PROSSIT
armed himself and when the CRAIGs attempted to compel him to vacate he shot and
killed both of them. He gave himself up, but was released on the grounds of
self-defense.
