My cousins, now scattered all over the US with ancestors from Greenwood
County, KS, are trying to solve the problems of unlabeled pictures inherited
by several of us. We have some names of photographers, some pictures which
are labeled (very few) and are trying to compare with those pictures we
already have.
Photographer's names we have: Howard , Opera House Block, Eureka, KS; S.H.
Hutchings of Burlington, KS (another one with Hutchings & Smith' Traveling
Art Gallery of Burlington, KS); Ino Lewis, Eureka, KS; G.A. Hughes, Howard,
KS; Atherton, N Topeka, Eureka, Osage City, Salina, KS; Lewis, Eureka, KS;
E.O. Shideler, Burlington, KS. Several of them have IL addresses, W.A.
Culver of Chicago, IL; Pittman of Springfield, IL; B.L. Rider of Chicago,
IL.
Our common ancester is a Mary Wherry (Wharry) McCombs who is listed in the
1860 KS Greenwood Cty census living with a James Wharry ( we think perhaps
her brother) along with her five children, 1. Rachel b.1838 in Marshall Cty,
WV(was Ohio Cty, VA) married to a Hiram Cunningham, (Have read this was
either the first or second marriage to be held in Greenwood County) Some of
Rachel's decendants live in MI. 2. Mary Margaret b. 1840, no descendants
( as far as we know now), 3. Elizabeth b 1842 married a William Hunnicut,
some of her desc. live in WA. 4. George Wherry McCombs, b. 1848 married a
Melissa Anderson, his desc live in TX. 5. John Davis McCombs b. 1856 who
married a Mary Caroline Christianson, da of a Sarah Brock and Charles
Christianson. John and Mary Caroline's desc live: one in WA and three in CA.
We have "daughtered" out his line.
Mary's obit says she arrived in 1859 and her husband was dead but no
records can be found of either his birth or death. His name, of course, was
John, b 1803 and he is listed with Mary and the four oldest children in the
1850 Marshall Cty, WV census. This is the only info we have of our John.
Have just seen one entry with that date and name and have inquired of the
GenForum message just last night.
Other names related to our ancestors are Miller, Goodnight, Cheney, Lund,
Heaton, perhaps Muchmore.
We are wondering if someone in KS has information about who might have the
photographer's records of that time period now. Also wonder if there are
any descendants still living in KS that would like to correspond with us.
I have a MyFamily.com website and have about sixteen pages of photos already
put on the website and all of us are trying to ID them.
Would appreciate any thoughts or ideas on where to look next.
