Catholic Educator Dies at Atchison.
Special to The Capital.
Atchison.-- Mother Lucy DOOLEY, 79, who was mother superior of Mount St. Scholastica Convent here until last June died Thursday after an extended illness. SHe was a nun 57 years and headed the local institution 26 years.
Mother Lucy established Mount St. Scholastica College here, Donnelly Community College, Kansas City, Kan., and various parochial schools. Six hundred nuns, all directly under her supervision, taught in Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, California and Mexico.
For 27 years Mother Lucy was a teacher and principal of St. Louis College, a parochial grade school here. She was treasurer of the Bendictine community of nuns here three years and was then elected Mother.
Last June 6 she was succeeded by Mother Alfred SEBROLL when illness limited her activities.
From 1926 to 1950 Mother Lucy headed a national organization, the Papal Congregation of St. Scholastica, composed of 15 Benedictine convents located in the United States and Mexico.
Surviving are four sisters, and three brothers, Mrs. Roger FINNEGAN, Mrs. David LAWLESS, James Edward and William DOOLEY, all of Atchison County, Mrs. Thomas FINNEGAN, Houston, Texas, and Miss Irene DOOLEY, Cleveland, Ohio.
She wa a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James DOOLEY Sr., and was born and reared in Atchison County. She entered the convent in 1892 and professed vows in 1894.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Mount St. Scholastica Chapel. The Most Rev. Charles F. BUDDY, bishop of San Diego, Calif., will be celebrant of the funeral Mass. Mgsr. Eugene F. VALLELY, Topeka, will preach the sermon. Burial will be int he convent cemetery.
