Maretha Irene Garten, daughter of William and Comfort Garten was born on
February 10, 1870 at Princeton, Ind., and departed this life on Sept.,
24, 1938 at her home in Delphos Kansas. In the fall of 1878 she moved to
Ottawa county, Kansas, and settled near the present site of Bennington,
where she grew to womanhood.
On May 24, 1900 she was united in marriage to Frank W. Smith and they located
on a farm northwest of Delphos, which has been her home since. To this
union one son, Robert, was born.
When a young woman she united with the Methodist church in Bennington,
from which church she never moved her membership.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her son, Robert; four brother, Alvin H. Garten
and John W. Garten of Coldwater, Kansas; Oscar Garten and Reed Garten of
Plains, Kansas; two sisters, Mrs. Ada Klippert, of Los Alamas, California,
and Mrs. Maude L. Smith, of Delphos, Kansas; besides other more distant
relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, and were carried out as had
been requested by Mrs. Smith. The Rev. E. L. Brown, of Lincoln, formerly
pastor of the Presbyterian church in Delphos, conducted the services. Mr.
B. R. McPherson, of Salina sang two selections. Interment was made in the
Delphos cemetery, with the Eastern Star chapter of which Mrs. Smith was
a faithful member in charge of the graveside services.-Delphos Republican.
Lott & Stine of Glasco were the morticians.
