Fellow list members,
We are getting closer to the solution. I called Deborah Barker and she said
there is definitely such a book and they have not only a reference copy but
a circulating copy. BUT -- the part by Valentine is not the whole book, his
portion is in the front. She said it was published in 1993. So was the
"History of Franklin County," the title by which Ms. Barker referred to the
book. My latest guess is that the Valentine work was incorporated into the
1993 history book.
I had a couple of emails from another list member citing pages in the 1993
book where Judge Valentine could be found, but I mistakenly thought that he
was referring to personal information about the Valentine family, which was
not what anyone was looking for. Mea culpa if I misunderstood.
If what we're looking for is really the 1993 county history, the library
does indeed have several copies of the book (one reference, and several
circulating), and I know exactly where it is on the shelf. It was the
Valentine name that threw me. There is no author/compiler name on the cover
of the 1993 history, but it is a thick hardcover book bound in black.
When the book first went on sale 10 years ago, I think advance copies were
$49 and if you ordered later, it was $65. At that time, orders could be
placed through the Ottawa Library. That may not still be true, as Ms.
Barker could only suggest Interlibrary Loan. Tomorrow when everything is
open again, I'll check out my theory and see if I can find any copies still
for sale. But if they were, I think Ms. Barker would have mentioned it.
I was right about one thing, the Historical Society has a copy of the book.
Ms. Barker referred to the society as "The Records Center," as that building
is where it keeps its holdings.
If we are looking for family information in the 1993 history, and copies are
no longer available, I'll do what I can to help anyone looking for Franklin
County ancestry. As a cardholder of the Ottawa Library, I can check out one
of the circulating copies. Normal checkout periods are three weeks, with
one renewal unless the copy has been requested by another patron. This
would give me more time to look through the book than to do it at the
library. Copying costs would also be lower at off-site facilities.
I'll get back to you as soon as I can!
Alma
