Subject: [KSFRANKL] Thomas Hamilton Finch (II) b 1816 NC & Sarah Ann Barnes b 1817 OH

Thomas Hamilton Finch was the son of Thomas Hamilton Finch (I) and Elitha or
Telitha Holloman. Thomas (I) was generally known as "Hamilton" (or
sometimes "Hambleton"), but Thomas (II) was known as Thomas or Tom. Thomas
(II) was born in Yadkin County, NC, in an area which is now in Surry County.
He died in 1901 in Franklin County and is buried near Ottawa in Fouts
Cemetery southwest of town.
Sarah Ann Barnes was the daughter of Adam Barnes and Rhoda Ann Lee. Rhoda
was the daughter of Revolutionary War soldier William Lee, who moved from
what is now Greene Co., PA to Warren Co., OH in 1805 (he died in 1807).
Sarah died in 1885 in Franklin County and was also buried at Fouts Cemetery.
Thomas and Sarah were married in 1837 in Warren Co., OH. Thomas came to
Wayne Co., IN with his parents in 1829. In Indiana he met a fellow named
Barnes who said he had a cute cousin back home in Ohio, so Thomas went to
take a look and fell in love. Later on, Thomas and Sarah removed to Henry
Co., IN where their daughter Rhoda Jane was born in 1848 (my
great-great-grandmother). Thomas and Sarah went on to Jay Co., IN and were
there by 1860 when their last child, Willard McClellan Finch, was born.
Thomas and Sarah came to Franklin County in 1877.
Calvin Lee Finch (b 1857) and Willard M. Finch also came to Franklin County,
though both returned to Indiana to marry their sweethearts. Their oldest
children were born in Indiana. Eventually they both returned to Franklin
County. Most Franklin Countians with Finch ancestry today descend from one
of these brothers.
Rhoda Jane first married John Tibbetts in 1866 in Henry Co., IN. They were
divorced in Jay Co., IN in 1877. The divorce record is dated March 1877.
On 14 July 1877, in Jay Co., Rhoda Jane married Perry Graham. Perry is a
mystery man. Supposedly he died about 1879, in Franklin County, but I've
never been able to find him. There's also a story saying that he deserted
Rhoda Jane, just as her first husband had. Rhoda Jane married third, and
last, Amos M. Stoffer, 10 Nov 1889 at Appanoose in Franklin County (up near
Centropolis). She is said to have died in Nov 1899 in Franklin County and
be buried at Evergreen Mound (Baxter) Cemetery, northwest of Ottawa, but
there is no stone and I've found no obit. An old plat book says that three
lots at Evergreen Mound were owned by "A. Stoffer." This is the closest I
can get.
Amos Stoffer was a widower with several children. In 1904 he married a
widow named Marion Stocking. He and Marion are buried at Highland Cemetery
in Ottawa.
Rhoda Jane had two sons by John Tibbetts, Willard and Thomas. They did not
live in Franklin County, but Thomas visited here at one time. By Perry
Graham there was one child, Arminda Elizabeth Graham, b 1878. Arminda,
often called "Amanda," or "Betty" or "Lizzie" in her younger years, was my
great-grandmother. She died in 1958 and I remember her from my childhood.
There was also one child by Amos Stoffer, a son named Charley. Charley
Stoffer lived in Oklahoma.
There are a number of Finch descendants still in Franklin County and I have
a lot of information on many of the lines from Thomas (II). They are also,
of course, descendants of the Barnes and Lee families. I have quite a bit
on the Barneses, less on the Lees. William Lee was married 3 times and had
at least 21 children (some say 28). The lists of his children vary greatly!
Sarah Barnes's sister, Cynthia Barnes, also married into the Finch family.
If you're looking for any of these families, just let me know.
