Robin,

I did watch out for any alternate spellings; I just thought that perhaps there might be a couple I hadn't thought of. I hadn't thought of the intrusive "r." That I can double-check next time.

Were any of the family ever known as "Losch"? Or use a very different variant like "Larchbow" or something similar?

I mentioned other cities named Ottawa because it's not uncommon for folks who have never been here to mistake our Ottawa for one of the others. My mother once received a letter that the Post Office had sent first to Ottumwa, Iowa. And a college friend from Haiti often received his packages via the capital of Canada. If someone in Nebraska got mixed up, Joseph could have died somewhere else entirely. Well, it's something you might keep in mind.

It's probably very unlikely that Joseph was merely passing through at the time of his death. THAT would undoubtedly have made the front page of the newspaper!

The phrase "a few days ago" makes me uncomfortable, too. I would think of "a few days" as perhaps a week or two. However, the time frame may have been interpreted differently by the person who wrote it up. We can be fairly sure that Joseph had died by 20 Jan 1904, but there's no guarantee that he lived into January. I can check the last couple of weeks of December.

Have you located Joseph in the 1900 Census? I just found him living in Fairview Tp., Grant Co., OK in the household of his son-in-law, William B. Grissom, 64. Joseph was 77 and born in Pennsylvania. Incidentally, his surname is spelled Loshbaugh in the index. So, he wasn't here at the time of the Census. And he died before the 1905 Kansas Census, so that would be of no help.

Are you absolutely sure that Joseph left Oklahoma? According to my 2005 atlas, it has an Ottawa County and several towns that begin with the letter O. Plenty of room for mistakes there.

Any ideas about the reason Joseph would have uprooted himself in his old age, to travel to a place where he had no friends or relatives? It just doesn't sound logical. Of course, what I find logical might not be the same as his feelings in the matter.

Whew, that's about all I can think of for now. There are a lot of possibilities, and I hope you'll consider them in light of the little that you know. Maybe something will jump out at you. After all, you're more familiar with the family than I am.

Let me know if you should come up with any further clues.

Alma
