Manuel L. Cravens, 84, died Monday (Aug. 6, 2001) at Friendly Acres Retirement Community in Newton.

He was born July 15, 1917, to Charles and Nellie (Dyer) Cravens in Huntsville, Ark. He married Fay Dreyer Nov. 2, 1941, in Manhattan. She preceded him in death Feb. 20, 2000.

He lived in the Newton area most of his life, graduating from Newton High School in 1936. He served for three and a half years in the U.S. Air Force. He retired from the Newton Post Office in 1979 after 29 years of service. He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church was active in getting the Newton Area Senior Center established, serving as president, vice president and fund raiser. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 2, the local Chapter No. 2833 of AARP in Newton and the local Chapter of NARVE, government employees of Newton.

Survivors include: a son, Robert Cravens of Los Angeles; four daughters, Susan Ringel of Sugar Land, Texas, Ann Buller of Austin, Texas, Nancy Hillman of Kansas City, Mo., and Alice Goering of Goessel; a half-sister, Virginia Mae Myers of Kansas City, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by: a half-sister, Joyce Winningham; and a brother, Edward Cravens.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday with family greeting friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Salem United Methodist Church with the Rev. LeRoy Bott officiating.

Burial will be in Hesston Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with the Newton Area Senior Center and Friendly Acres Retirement Community, both in care of the funeral home.
