Poor Commissioner Alfred C. Hale Dead.
Alfred C. HALE, 74 years old, former commissioner of the poor of Shawnee county, died at his home at 1102 North Van Buren street early yesterday morning. He had been sick several months. He died of heart failure and dropsy.
Mr. HALE moved to Topeka in 1870 and has been a continuous resident of this city since that time. He was born in 1838 in Clarksville, Ohio. He was appointed commissioner of the poor of Shawnee county in 1888, when the office was created. He continued to work until July 1910, when he was succeeded by C.B. BACON, the present commissioner.
When he was commissioner his office was located in a building on lower Kansas avenue until the present court house was completed. During his long administration Mr. HALE never neglected any person. His greatest work was done in 1903 during the flood. He worked so hard and such long hours on this occasion that he never fully recovered from the effects of it.
Prior to the time he became commissioner of the poor Mr. HALE engaged in the real estate business in North Topeka and later conducted a grocery store on North Kansas avenue.
Mr. HALE is survived by his wife, Mary E. HALE; one son, F.E. HALE, of Meriden, and a daughter, Mrs. Charles SANDS, of Topeka. He was a brother of M.M. HALE, who retired as city treasurer about two years ago. He has two sisters, Mrs. Malinda SHERWOOD, of Xenia, Ohio, and Mrs. David PRITCHARD, of Spiceland, Ind.
Mr. and Mrs. HALE and family came to Topeka in 1870 from Richmond, Ind., and were accompanby M.M. HALE and family, Richard BINNS and family, now of Rossville, and C.H. BOWEN and family. The two brothers, A.C. and M.M. HALE and C.H. BOWEN engaged in the cattle raising business for several years. Later the HALE brothers settled on a farm north of North Topeka.
Funeral services will be held from the home, 1102 North Van Buren street, tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. It was the request of Mr. HALE that no flowers be sent. Interment will be in the Rochester cemetery.
