The Valley Falls New Era
Thursday
November 15, 1906
Jess FREELAND is suffering with an infected sore elbow from a wound caused by a kick of a mule.
Wednesday it became necessary to remove the middle finger of Mrs. T. BECKLEY's left hand to prevent the extension of blood poisoning. The infection was caused by a simple scratch a few days ago.
Sam HENDRICKSON and family who have been on one of the HARMAN farms for three years left Monday for St. Joe where they expect to find employment and try city life for awhile. As soon as he is able Same says he will try farming again the best place of all.
The fire alarm between 10 and 11 o'clock Sunday night brought a big crowd to see the chimney at Chart SMITH's livery stable burn out. The fire in the flue burned furiously and a long time endangering the building in the high wind and when every thing was dry as tinder until the roof and surroundings were soaked by the fire department. No stray sparks were allowed to start a fire elsewhere and when the fire in the flue was exhausted the danger was over. Water works, hose carts and trained firmen come in handy, and are very satisfactory nerve quieters.
After he closes out his interests at Cedar Falls, Wm. FOX intends to take a rest. He has ben "40 years in the wilderness" and he deserves a holiday. Next year he may visit England. For awhile he and his wife will visit around among their friends in this country.
