The Valley Falls New Era
Thursday
August 15, 1907
The sweltering heat of last Thursday and Friday was too much fro all animated nature. Man and beast suffered. Old humidity surrounded them in his most distressing power. The mercury was not high in the tube, 92.4, but the steaming heat was oppressive. The corn laughed at our discomforture. Many people were over come by the heat. Friday was a day when no man should have worked, and those who did toiled to their sorrow. Saturday the temperature was higher, 98, but it was retempered by cooling breezes making life worth living. Sunday the north wind prevailed making it an ideal summer day and forgetting (?) the heat of the previous days everybody rejoiced. For the sake of the corn we resolved not to complain, but make the best of it whether it blows hot or cold.
Clark TUCKER of Holton, county treasurer, and Lou THOMPSON ex-county tresurer of Jackson county were in the city last Thursday evening on their way home having been to Topeka to see the State Tax Commission in regard to a system for the keeping of tax rolls by the county clerks. Mr. THOMPSON is the author of a system now in use in Jackson, Brown and other counties and the commission was very much impressed by his methods of accounting. Uniform methods are to go into effect next year and THOMPSON may have found the way.
Last week G.W. JAMES bought of Will RAMSEY a house and lot, known as the Squire's property, on the extreme north end of Sycamore street for $450. He expects to move into it in the early fall in time he hopes to vote for the county seat change. "Senator" JAMES, as his friends sometimes call him, owns an "80" near Oskaloosa, but he does not think that is the place for the county seat. Thousands of others are of the same mind. Here brother JAMES and his good wife expect to spend the balance of their days in peace and comfort under the shadow of the court house cupala. Welcome.
