The Oskaloosa Times
Saturday
May 15, 1896

Hurrah for Oskaloosa. The township Assessor reports that the enumeration of the inhabitants of our young growing city is 1,003. This is a decided increase over last year. We are not yet the metropolis of the county, but making rapid strides that way, and will soon be known by the proud appellation of the "big town" of old Jefferson. WIth electric lights and an up-town depot there is no good reason why we should not double our population in a very few years.

F.M. JOHNSON returned home Wednesday from his visit to Guthrie, Oklahoma, and expresses himself as well pleased with what he saw of the country. The wind is to him the most objectionable feature. He says crops of all kinds are looking fine, several good rains fell while there which he thinks will be hard on the chintz bugs and populists. He brought home with him some native flowers which he will try to cultivate.
