Valley Falls.
Four tramps took lodging in our school house last Saturday night and remained over night, but they were an honest set of fellows and took nothing. Their honesty was somewhat prompted probably by the presence of one of the school board, who was an early caller and saw them off.
The following names persons enjoyed themselves and ate turkey with Cap. L. H. GEST and family Thanksgiving day: Charles KING, wife and Miss Nellie, Dove WALKER and wife, Wm. McCLURE and family, J.L. MEANS and wife, Em. CAMPBELL and wife, John McCLURE and wife, C.G. GEST and family and M.M. MAXWELL and wife.
Our rural youngsters tried their skill at spelling last Friday evening and while spelling for the championship they began going down on the right and down on the left as follows:
John MEANS, fell on weevil,
Alex RULE dropped on season,
Thomas MEANS and Lewis YENKEY got herring in their throat,
Clarence ARMSTEAD slipped away on a slight acquaintance,
Ada BOOTH left on scalene,
H. G. McKEEVER took a dose of parallelogram,
Saluda DAVIS strayed away on fossiliferous,
Minnie MAXWELL was champion.
One day recently the neighbors drove their cattle to I.BOOTH's dehorning schute for the purpose of having them dehorned. After one of Cap GEST's steers had been deprived of his horns he came stubborn, layed down in the schute and would not budge by twisting, lifting, prying, pulling or anything that the eight persons present could do until at last Mr. BOOTH ordered the old cat brought from the house which he held by the tail and dragged over the steers head a time or two while the old cat bit, scratched and squalled. That steer began bauling, jumped up and ran out of that schute, bauling as if old Nick was after him, while a laugh and shout went up from those men present. Try it boys, no charges for the information.
