He Beat Himself.
Cy KATHAN, the good natured republican J.P. from Rural township tells a good joke on himself.
Last year he was elected a justice of the peace of Rural township by a handsome majority, an dhis conduct of the office was such that when the primary was held this fall several of his friends suggested that he be renominated, but the committeeman in charge said, "No, Kathan holds over; justices are elected for two years and he was elected only last fall." "That's right," spoke up the Squire, himself, "I'm not a candidate now but next fall I'll be around for your votes again," and everybody laughed and said, "You'll get 'em."
So only one justice was nominated by either party, but lo, when the election came off it was discovered that a mistake had been made and that Cy was elected to fill vacancy only; so now he is a politician out of a job by his own hand, so to speak.
