Was John Andrew FLORA (1845IN-1934KS), of Labette County Kansas, a)- in the Union Army, thusly, b)- member of the Grand Army of the Republic????

We can NOT confirm Judge Nelson Case's (http://www.kancoll.org/books/cutler/labette/labette-co-p15.html) nor Wm. Cutler's
(http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/archives/labette/1901/f/floraja.shtml) stories regarding John Andrew's Army service. Two people searched, then a paid search of the National Archives in Washington DC, by Deborah Petite, <http://www.rollcallresearch.com>; revealed:

(7/14/05): "Well, I tracked John A Flora through the census records, to see if in subsequent years he identified himself as a veteran in the years that question was asked. He did not." (JW)

(8/20/05): "I ordered and reviewed the record for John Flora [Sr] with the 6th Indiana Infantry, and certain he is not the right one [subsquent review of pension reveal he was our John Andrew FLORA's father]. This John Flora [Sr] was born in York County, PA. He was 45 [he lied about age, was 61] in 1861 - too young to be your John Sr. and too old to be John Andrew. I checked the service record indexes for Kansas and Ohio, but did not find any records for a Flora/Flora in the 11 Kansas Infantry or 6 Ohio Cavalry. I did find John Andrew's brother [Daniel Rice Boon FLORA, in the 7th Kansas Cavalry, but no record of John in that regiment. I checked similar spellings, ..." "All the John Flora/Florys in Indiana regiments had middle initials of "C" or "W". I can only guess that your Floras may have served in local home defense/milita units that may not have been turned over to the regular army. I'm sorry the search wasn't more fruitful." (DP)

(8/25/05): "This John Flora [Sr} enlisted on August 20,1861. He was 45 [he lied about age] when he enlisted and was born in York County, PA. He was discharged on Feburary 14, 1863 for chronic diarrhea." (DP)

Please help.
