Hello all....

Once again we have added more gleanings from Lincoln County newspapers to the
website...

April 21, April 28, and May 5, 1881 gleanings from the Lincoln County Beacon
are up online at:
http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/glean80.htm

Normally I add the surnames here, but this time I included names mentioned in
the report on the county commissioners' meeting as well as reports on
happenings at the District Court and there are many, many names.... too many
for me to type out here. I'd suggest that you either use the search
engine, in
the red box at the top of the main page for Lincoln COunty, or go to the
newspaper gleaning site (URL is above) and look through the dates mentioned.

The report on the County Commissioners' meeting took up a few columns of the
paper so I just listed the names mentioned. You have the option of checking
out the microfilm of the newspaper from the State Historical SOciety through
interlibrary loan through your local library. Just go to http://www.kshs.org/
and look for the link to "Collections". There you'll find the NEWSPAPERS on
microfilm section and another link on how to get things on interlibrary loan.
Print off the interlibrary loan page so you can take it to your library and
show the staff how to request the film. And don't forget to write down the
microfilm reel number of the film you want. The Kansas State Historical
Society does a great service to researchers by providing microfilmed material
on interlibrary loan.

I had some personal issues with putting the District Court information from
the
newspaper up online. Some of this stuff is pretty heavy.... alas, much of
human history is pretty heavy. If you have any sort of problem with the court
cases being up online please let me know. They must have caused a bit of stir
at the time as well as in a later issue of the paper the editor, Mr. Wait,
defended his right to put up court information on an individual who had
verbally attacked something he'd reported on a court case. Neither gentleman
minced his words.

At times I also include short articles in the gleanings that give no
mention of
names to give a picture of the times/settings as seen by the newspaper staff.
There must have been a wild night in Lincoln the day before a prohibition law
came into effect the next day and Mr. Wait's comments I put up online were
indicative of the moral outrage of many of the time at "the whiskey party."
Keep in mind that Mr. Wait was a strong prohibitionist, a devout Protestant
and
a Republican (though if memory serves me correct he became a Populist later
on). His writing style, common at the time, would at times seem inflamatory
now. But like most newspaper editors back then he was not only providing
information to his readers but also promoting his ideas/ideals. And after
years of looking through Kansas newspapers I'd add that he was much more
ecumenical/broadminded than some of his colleagues in other parts of the
state.

Good luck with your research

Bill
