The following is pretty long for a list, but I am sending it for anyone
researching the Kettler family that settled in Block in 1870. Would
love to hear from anyone who is working on this family.

Ludewig Kettler became a citizen of the United States on September 7,
1860, in the U. S. District Court of the Western District of Virginia.
His sponsor was William Goetze. 9

Louis and his [2nd] wife [Rosine] Helene purchased 70 acres on Boggs
Run, Marshall County, (West) Virginia in 1863 and sold it in Oct. of
1868. On January 19, 1869, in Marshall County, Louis gave power of
attorney to Helene. 10

By March of 1870, they were in Miami County, Kansas, having traveled by
way of LaHarpe, Illinois, per son Christian’s obituary. The family was

recorded as "Hattler (?)" in the transcription of the June, 1870 Census,

Osage Township, Miami Co., KS. None of the children had been in school
that year.11 A "Child of Louis", who died prematurely, was buried at
Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Block, Miami Co., KS on March 10, 1870. 12

In July of 1876, Louis was killed by a train in Illinois as he attempted

to cross the tracks in his buggy while on a trip from Kansas to visit
his son William in LaHarpe, IL. An inquest was held on July 30, 1876 in

LaHarpe. William purchased his father’s coffin and digging of a grave on

July 30, 1876 in LaHarpe, and purchased his headstone in LaHarpe in
December,1877. Children listed as heirs: William Kettler, Louis
Kettler, Augusta Kettler (m. to W.H. Showalter), Henry Kettler (minor),
August Kettler (minor), Christian Kettler (minor), Louise Kettler
(minor), and Otto Kettler (minor). Probate records give Louis’s death
date as 11 July 1876. 8 [This date seems unlikely given the date of the

inquest and digging of the grave. See below.]

The "Miami Republican", 4 August 1876: "Mr. Louis Kettler, who lived
some four miles southeast of Paola, went on a visit to some relatives in

Illinois. On Sunday morning last he was unfortunately killed by the
cars running over him as he attempted to drive across the railroad in a
buggy."8 [According to the World Almanac, perpetual calendar, August 4,

1876 was a Friday, so the preceding Sunday would have been July 30.]
According to the "Western Spirit", 4 August 1876: "Lewis Kettler,
whose wife had filed her petition for divorce in the District Clerk’s
office in this county, was run over by a train of cars in Illinois, a
few days ago, and killed. Some of our lawyers think ‘the best laid
schemes o’ mice and men gang aft a gley’ " 8

See also the 4 August 1876 article from La Harper [La Harpe, IL]
newspaper: "A terrible accident, one of those hard to account for, and
for which nobody is to blame except perhaps one of the unfortunates,
whose life paid for his temerity - or heedlessness - ocurred at the
railroad crossing, at the east end of the depot grounds and opposite the

house of J. N. Bainter, on Sunday morning, at about ten minutes before
seven o’clock. Mr. Henry Richter, his wife, a child aged 2 years and
his uncle Mr. Louis Kettler, and old man, in all four persons, were
crossing the above mentioned point in a wagon [when] the westbound
express train No. 3, running at a speed of some 20 miles an hour, struck

the wagon on the fore wheeel with the point of her pilot smashing it
into kindling and throwing its occupants into the air. Mr. Richter
clung to the spring seat, which clung to the pilot and remained there
until the train was stopped, receiving such severe injuries about the
head that he remained unconscious until death, which occured in about an

hour and a half.... Mr. Kettler was found dead near the woman and
child.... The dead and wounded were taken to the Central Hotel, from
whence at 10 o’clock the same evening the remains of the two men were
buried, the heat and lack of ice making it necessary. ....Mr. Kettler
had just arrived from Kansas to visit his son, who lives on North
Prairie, and was on his way to his house when killed. ...When the
distressing accident at the railroad crossing occurred...the question
was asked...’What shall we do with the bodies?’ and where shall the
maimed be carried for protection? Mr. William Barr of the Central House

was present and answered, ‘carry them to my house,’ and it was done, the

dead and injured were transported to the ‘Central’ where those past
other human sevices were prepared for burial - the last sad rites
performed, and from whence late in the night they were removed to the
Cemetery and buried."

The La Harpe Genealogical and Historical Society does not have a record
of his grave in their cemetery books.

Miami County Residents and Taxpayers List, 1878, p.34: "Kettler, Louis,

est., Valley Township".

Notice of sheriff’s estate sale, in the matter of Louis Kettler,
deceased, was published in the "Republican Citizen", Paola, KS, 28 Nov
1878, p.3, c. 6.

Marie Elise "Mary" Englebert Kettler remarried a William Esmus in August

of 1878, per an announcement in the Paola, KS, Miami co., ‘Republican
Citizen" (2 Jan 1879, p. 2, c4), and per her signature on probate
records and receipts. 8 William Esmus bought Louis Kettler (estate)’s
farm at auction on 16 December 1878. 8
