Woodmen of the World to celebrate centennial
"Woodmen of the World has been around since 1890 as a fraternal life insurance society," Pool said. "That's different than a company; it's totally run and governed by the members."
"We're a non-profit organization," Pool said, "and at the end of the fiscal year remaining money is refunded to the membership. That totaled $130 million last year."
Projects of the lodge have included placing park and playground equipment, placing emergency equipment with police and fire departments, placing flagpoles at libraries and other public places and flags with numerous individuals and groups.

"We present a lot of flags," Pool said. "We do food baskets, and just lots and lots of things. We have an annual harvest dinner and awards presentation.
"We present trophies to outstanding students of American history at all the schools who'll let us."
Youth lodge activities are "mostly fun things," he said. Those include a weeklong summer camp, canoe trips, camping trips, fishing, and ball games.
"We try to help youth have good time and make sure they're safe activities," Pool said.
Joseph Root started the organization and devised the name while sitting in church and thinking about the protection provided by the surrounding wood. The Woodmen and the Woodmen's Circle for women combined in the 1950s. National headquarters is in Omaha, Neb.
"We're for anyone who likes fun and fellowship and we have programs on all kinds of topics. We try to make our community a better place to live because we're here."
