I am looking for information on my native american roots in Kentucky-Tenn. I have always known that my Grandmother was supposed to be 1/2 or 1/4 native american of the Choctaw tribe. However, I am not sure that this is the right tribe.
The family came from Clifty, Logan Co. Kentucky when they migrated to Indian Territory and Texas in 1870's area. The people I am trying to verify as native american and of which tribe are as follows:
Thomas Jefferson MAYES b. 1823 Tenn. m. Ruth Ann MCELVAIN in Nashville Tenn. 1856.
Ruth Ann MC ELVAIN b. 1836 Clifty, Logan County Ky.
Their daughter:
Martha Ann MAYES b. 1858 Clifty Logan Co. Ky. m. William Henry DAVIS 1875 in Ky.
I have not found these people on the Rolls yet but at the time of the Dawes Roll in IT they were travelling back and forth to Colorado from IT and may not have gotten registered or perhaps they did not want to. I have a picture of Martha Ann MAYES and she is definitely native american. After her husband William H. DAVIS died, she remarried Mack HUNT in IT and this marriage is on the Chickasaw marriage rolls on the grooms list. I am confused because on all the rolls, the most predominately with MAYES names is the Cherokee tribe. Family info relates that all of them were native american but that is not proved.
Does anyone have any information or ideas or suggestions as how to locate the native american roots of this family? Any help appreciated.
