James C Smith

Booneville, Ky ... James C Smith, 74 of Island Creek passed away Thursday, January 23, 2003 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky from an apparent heart attack. He was a member of the Booneville United Methodist Church, a retired farmer and a veteran of World War II. He was born in Clay County, Kentucky on October 29, 1928, the son of the late Rueben and Fannie Mae Bowles Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Lucy Schwab Smith of Route 2, Booneville, Kentucky; a daughter, Nicole Smith, Lexington, Ky; a step-daughter, Donna Bishop of Cincinnati, Ohio; two brothers, Robert B Smith, Covington, Kentucky and Carl E Smith of Wellington, Ohio; a sister, Elizabeth Becknell, Irvine, Kentucky; a step granddaughter, Crystal Schmuelling of Cincinnati, Ohio and a half-sister, Edith Sapp of Campbellsville, Kentucky and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Sunday at 2:00 pm at the Searcy and Strong Funeral Home with the Rev Jamie Brunk officiating. Visitation was held on Saturday evening from 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm at the funeral home. Burial at the Griffith Cemetery with Searcy and Strong Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.



Laura Barrett

Plainfield, Ill - Laura Barrett 65 passed this life on January 5, 2003 at 12:01 am. She was the daughter of the late Robert and Louvena Abshear Barrett.

She is also the sister of Sarah Bishop of Booneville, Kentucky, Nettie Davis of Shorewood, Illinois, Bessie Osborne of Melrose Park, Illinois and a very special brother, John (Carl) Ramsey Barrett; a stepdaughter, Kathy & Jim Octter; a stepson, George & Karen Foy; three step-granddaughters; and two step-grandsons; 18 nieces and 11 nephews; and several great and great great nieces and nephews too numerous to name.

Laura was laid to rest Saturday, January 11, 2003 at 10:30 am. Rev George Koon, Jr officiating. Interment at Beverly Hills Memorial Garden in Morgantown. Arrangements by Fred L Jenkins Funeral Home.



Michael C Couch

Booneville, Ky - Michael C Couch 45 of HC88 passed away suddenly at the Kentucky River Medical Center, Jackson, Ky on Saturday, January 25, 2003 from apparent asphyxiation. He was a former salesman with Jackson Wholesale and a member of the Pentecostal Church of God. He was also a member of the Breathitt Masonic Lodge #649

He was born in Plymouth, Michigan on July 18, 1957, the son of Elmer Couch and the late Irene Haddix Couch.

Survivors include his wife, Fannie Denice Couch and a daughter, Karisha Couch, both of Booneville, Kentucky; future son-in-law, Kevin Hayton, Pikeville, Kentucky; father, Elmer Couch of Jackson, Kentucky; three brothers, Elmer B Couch and his wife Eunice, Bobby R Couch and his wife Becky, John Couch and his wife Vickie, all of Jackson, Kentucky; two sisters, Sandy Miller and Anita Little and husband, Bill also of Jackson, Kentucky; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Irene Haddix Couch

Funeral services at the Booneville First Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, January 29, 2003 with the Rev Gene Little officiating. Visitation was held at the church on Tuesday evening, January 28, from 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm. Burial in the Shepherd Memorial Cemetery with Searcy and Strong Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers Rusty Pierson, Chris Gabbard, Vada Wilson, Paul Smith, Clayton Holliday and Paul Sizemore.



Spicie Mae Lawson

Beattyville, Ky - Spicie Mae Seale Lawson 81, of Blaines Branch Road passed away Friday, January 24, 2003 at her residence. She was born May 10, 1921 in Beattyville, Kentucky to the late Dennis and Nellie Toler Seale. She was a retired cook and a nursing aide for the Lee County Constant Care Home and a member of the Beattyville Church of Christ.

She is survived by four sons, Roy Mitchell Lawson of Beattyville, Kentucky, Ray Burtchell and Terry Wayne Lawson, both of Cincinnati, Ohio and Roger Dale Lawson of Ellisville, Missouri; three daughters, Gwendolyn Overbee of Clay City, Kentucky, Charlotte Marie Bowling of Beattyville, Kentucky and Francis Ann Thomas of Cincinnati, Ohio; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. Also surviving are five brothers, Russell Napier of Connersville, Indiana, Elmer Seale of Nicholasville, Kentucky, Troy Seale of Lexington, Kentucky, Dennis Seale, Jr of Cincinnati, Ohio and Luther Seale of Connersville, Indiana; two sisters, Verna Bryant of Nicholasville, Kentucky and Geneva Sizemore of Beattyville, Kentucky and a host of friends and relatives.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepmother, Nettie Seale, a sister, Imogene Dunaway and a step-brother, Charlie Napier.

Funeral Services were held on Monday, January 27, 2003 at 11:00 am at the Booneville Funeral Home with the Rev Herman Newton officiating. Visitation was held on Sunday evening from 6:00 - 9:00 pm at the funeral home. Burial in the Couch Cemetery, Beattyville, Kentucky with the Booneville Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers were Brian and James Horton, Sean Flannigan, John Overbee, Glenn Bowling, and David Lawson. Honorary pallbearers were Randy Thomas and Kevin Sellars.



Barbara Jean Roberts

Booneville, Ky - Barbara Jean Roberts 51 of Island Creek, the widow of Michael Roberts passed away Tuesday, January 21, 2003 at the Pattie A Clay Regional Medical Center in Richmond, Kentucky. She was born September 7, 1951 in Oneida, Kentucky to Virginia Louise Cole Barrett and the late Fred Barrett. She was an employee of the Owsley County Board of Education and a member of the Walnut Grove Baptist Church.

Along with her mother, she is survived by a daughter, Mika Renee Roberts; a brother, Ronnie Barrett and his wife, Monica, of Booneville, Kentucky; her mother-in-law, Rosemary Roberts of Beattyville, Kentucky; 2 sisters-in-law, Debbie Piercy of Beattyville, Kentucky and Mary Ann Snowden of Nicholasville, Kentucky. Also surviviing are two nephews, Brady Barrett and Jonathan Piercy; four nieces, Toi Barrett, Emily Piercy and Amanda and Rachel Snowden; and a host of friends and relatives.

Along with her husband and her father, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Jennifer Renee Roberts

Funeral services were held on Friday, January 24, 2003, 1:00 pm at the Booneville Funeral Home with the Rev Randy Johnson and Rev J Jamison Brunk officiating. Visitation was held on Thursday evening at the funeral home from 6:00 - 9:00 pm. Burial in the Roberts Cemetery, Island Creek with the Booneville Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers were Josh Deaton, Brady Barrett, Joe Sheriff, Josh Grizzell, Josh Smith and Robert Helton.
