Hello, all. After a busy month or so, I want to continue with The Trumbo
Family book by Conrad W. Feltner. I've had a request for any references to
ROBBINS, and find the following. I've received the Index, too (239 pages)
and will be happy to check names for you.....Glenda
ANDRIUS TRUMBO m. Mary Maglena? = H. (HANS) JACOB TRUMBO m. Mary? 1739 in
VA. (He died 1783 in Rockingham Co., VA = JOHN TRUMBO (their second son and
third child), b. abt 1745 and who married MARY CUSTER, dau of ARNOLD and
BRIDGET CUSTER = *MARY TRUMBO, b. abt 1776 in PA, who married JAMES ROBBINS:
JOHN and MARY (CUSTER) TRUMBO'S children are shown as: (p. 324)
1. John, born 1770.
2. Amos, born in or before 1783
3. Jacob, born in 1776 or before.
4. Presley, born 1788.
5. Michael, born in or before 1782.
6. George, born1794.
7. Margaret, born in 1775 or before.
8. Bridget.
9. Clarissa born 1780-1790.
10. *MARY, born abt 1776.
11. Charlotte, born abt 1786.
The exact ages of these children hve not been determined in most cases, so
the order of birth is probably not correct.
JOHN TRUMBO...The second son and third child of H. JACOB TRUMBO and MARY
TRUMBO was John. He was born about 1745. Tradition has t that he married
MARY CUSTER, the daughter of ARNOLD and BRIDGET CUSTER. It is said that in
"1774, they moved to the west side of the Monongahela River and later
settled on Peter's Creek near Pittsburg, Pennsylvania." (Source: Information
on the family and THE TRUMBO FAMILY by S.B. Trumbo, includng information
collected by A.C. Trumbo.) Peter's Creek is on the west side of the
Monongahela River so it is possible they moved directly there.
JOHN TRUMBO is listed in Peters Township, Washngton County, Pennsylvania tax
lists in 1781 with 300 acres, seven horses, eight cattle, and ten sheep. He
was listed in Dickinson Twp., Washington County in 1785. Washington County
was formed in 1781 from Westmoreland County so it is possible he was in
Westmoreland County earlier. Minutes of Yohoquania County, Pennsylvania, now
Washington County, Pennsylvania, showed that he appraised the estate of JOB
ROBINS, had a case dismissed against him because the plaintiff, RICHARD
McCAHON, did not appear, and that he had a mark for his livestock. It was a
"crop and upper bill in the ear and his brand 'JT'". In 1788, Allegheny
County whose county seat is Pittsburg, was formed from Westmoreland and
Washington Counties.
The 1790 census of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, shows JOHN TRUMBO with
two white males less than sixteen years of age, five white males over
sixteen years of age, five white females and no slaves in his family. In
1791, he was listed for taxes in Mifflin Twp., Allegheny County.
"Mifflin is one of the largest townships in the county. It borders on the
Monongahela River from the mouth of Street's Run to the mouth of Pine Run, a
distance of more than twelve miles. The surface is hilly and deeply seamed
by numerous streams of whch the most important are Street's Run and its
branches Reed's Run and Weir's Run, West Run, Whitaker Run, Buttermilk Run,
Thompson's Run and Pin Run.
"The route of Braddock's army lay through this township, along the river
between Braddock's Upper and Lower Ripples. Coal was discovered in 1828 when
James H. Hays began mining operations at the mouth of Street's Run, the
present location of Hays Station.
"Owing to the great extent of Mifflin Township, many persons were obliged to
travel eght or nine miles to the place of election and the work of road
making caused great inconvenience. Jefferson Township was erected at the
January sessions in 1828 from the southern part of Mifflin and a small
portion of St. Clair. Peter's Creek, a large and important affluent of the
Monongahela drains nearly the whole township. It is formed by the confluence
of Fish Run and Piney Fork and receives the waters of Lick Run at the
Snowden line.
"The principal tributary streams from the north. In this township are
Pierce's Run, Beam's Run, Lewis' Run, and from the south, Scotia Run and Dry
Run. The land is well adapted to farming and stock raising. Coal and
limestone are abundant. (Source: History of Allegheny County, Pennnsylvania,
1889, Warner & Company, printed by John Morris Company, Chicago, IL.)
Peter's Creek was named for an Indian who befriended the early white
settlers.
In the 1810 census, John was still listed in Mifflin Twp., Allegheny County.
No listing for Trumbos were found in the 1820 census. In 1830, John is not
listed having died, but sons, George and Presley, were listed.
A deed in Allegheny County shows JOHN obtained his land on Peter's Creek
from JAMES CLARK 17 Feb 1785. CLARK had obtained a warrant 21 Feb 1772.
Evidently the Executive Council and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania then
also awarded a patent to JOHN for this 299 3/8ths acres.
On 17 Apr 1793, he sold 26 1/2 acres to LEWIS HUFFMAN for twenty pounds. In
this deed, his wife was listed as SARAH TRUMBO. On 17 Sep 1808, he sold his
son, JOHN, JR., 109 acres of ths land for $654. In this deed, his wife was
listed as EUNICE. This was the wife he referred to in his will as stated
below:
"In the name of God, Amen, I JOHN TROMBO of Miffln Township, Allegheny
County and State of Pennsylvania being in perfect health of body and of
sound mind and memory, bless be God for the same, but considering the
uncertainty of this transitory life do make and publish ths my last will and
testament in manner and form following to-wit:
"Principally and first off I recommend my immortal soul into the hands of
God who gave it and my body to the earth to be buried in a decent
Christian-like manner at the discretion of my executors hereinafter named.
And as to such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in
this life, I give and dispose of the same in the following manner to wit: I
will that all my lawful debts and funeral expenses be duly paid.
"Item: I give and bequeath unto my dear and loving wife one horse creature,
one cow, two beds and bedding, one chest, two kettles, one pot, teawear, one
saddle, and all her wearing apparel; also all the rent she has received or
may yet receive from the plantation which belonged to her former husband.
And as long as my said wife remains my widow, she is to have the lower end
of the mentioned house and her horse and cow kept by my son GEORGE, and no
longer.
"I give and bequeath to my son MICHAEL the low end of the plantation I live
on beginning at a white oak at HUFFMAN's line, from thence to run either ten
or twelve feet of the graveyard, from thence to the sink hole spring, from
thence to a stake, from thence to a glazed white oak, on the other side of
the fence, from thence to a marked white oak bush, from thence to a large
sycamore across the creek, from thence up the creek to WECKERHAUS' line; as
long as he resides thereon. But in case of his death or removal from the
premises, it is my will that in either case, the same shall descend to my
son GEORGE.
"I give and bequeath to my son GEORGE the remainder part of the place I live
on.
"I give and bequeath to my granddaughters to wit: SARAH TROMBOW, daughter of
my son AMOS one dollar , and SARAH TROMBOW daughter of my son JACOB ten
dollars each each when they arrive to the age of eighteen years.
"I will and bequeath that the remainder part of my estate real and personal
be equally divided amongst my children to wit: MICHAEL, JOHN, PRESLEY,
MARGARET SWIMS, BRIDGET LANE, CLARIEY McMILLIN, MARY ROBINS, and CHARLATE.
"And lastly I nominate constitute and appoint my loving friends **JOEL
FERREE and AARON APPLEGATE to be the executors of this my last will hereby
revoking all other wills, legacies, and bequests by me heretofore made and
declaring this and no other to be my last will and testament in witness
whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal ths thirtieth day of March one
thousand, eight hundred and thirteen.
"Signed, sealed, published, pronounced, and declared by the testator as his
last will and testament in the presence of us who in his presence and at his
request subscribed as witnesses, WILLIAM McCLURE, JAMES McCLURE, SAMUEL
McCLURE." It was recorded 8 May 1819.
(**Note: The Joel Ferree referred to here is my 2nd-gr grandmother, Sarah
Wells (Ferree) Norton's family. I have the family back to Jean LaVerree abt
1600 and will be happy to share information on these Ferrees....Glenda)
On 26 Dec 1835, EUNICE TRUMBO stated she was old and not able to work and
she agreed to leave all her possessions to PRESLEY TRUMBO if he would take
care of her and her business until her death. The catch was she had to be
taken care of to her satisfaction or the deal was off.
>From his will, it appears JOHN had eleven children. From its date of
probation, it seems he died about 1819. It seems he had two or possibly
three wives. He and they are probably buried in the cemetery mentioned in
the will.
The TRUMBOs and CUSTERs, now CASTORs in Pennsylvania, still live on some of
the land on Peter's Creek. The land included bottom land on Peter's Creek
and rose to the ridges on both sides, on which Watererman and Ridge Roads
now run. Other settlers in ths area with severl living in the immediate
vicinity, included Lewis HUTTONHAVER, Gabriel CASTER, Lewis HORKENDOTH,
Abner BEEDLE, Peter MILLAR, Samuel CUNNINGHAM, James GILLAM, JR., Jonathan
LOWE, Thomas CARROL, Lewis HUFFMAN, John BARKLEY, Elijah BEAM, James
HINDMAN, David POLLACK, Richard MAHAN, Henderson WHITMAN, Cary CARROL,
Sampson CASTER, and David KENEDY. All of these bought things at John's
estate sale.
Items sold at this sale included a dung shovel, a prow, collars, horse gear,
a meat tub, bridles, cupboard, lots of iron, calfskins, rawhide, an arm
chair, a hoe, augers, a neck yoke, an iron wedge, a hammer, an anvil, hog
tongs, a halter chain, plow shares, beds, cart wheels, a grindstone, a pot,
griddles, a bake oven, a copper kettle, a pair of scissors, a mattock,
dishes, an iron grate, a chest, a log chain, a harrow, a scythe and cradle,
a wagon, a stove, a still tub, a kettle, a table, wheat, sheep, a bull, a
steer, five cows, and a bay mare. The mare brought $50.75, the largest price
paid at the sale which brought in $228.40. The estate had been valued at
$568.57.
JOHN TRUMBO's children:
1. JOHN TRUMBO, Jr., born 1770. He married Rebecca DYE who was Welch but
spoke German. They had at least ten children. Census records indicate the
possibility of an additional son born 1804-1810. The only deed made by John
Jr. in Allegheny County was on 16 Sep 1810. He sold the land he had
purchased from his father to Thomas GASSET for $450. The tract of land, hs
father's whole patent, was called "Steady." At the time John Jr. sold the
land he was from Mifflin Township and his wife's name was Rebecca. It was at
this time, 1810, that he left Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, for Tuscarawas
County, Ohio. He received a deed from President James Madison through the
land office at Steubenville, Ohio, for the NW/4 of Sec. 25 Twp.24 Range 7on
15 Jan 1814. On 3 Dec 1826, he sold his share of his brother MICHAEL's land
in Tuscarawas County to John EDWARDS, his brother-in-law, for $20. They both
lived in One Leg Township of Tuscarawas County. On 22 Apr 1829, JOHN TRUMBO
and Rebecca, his wife, sold RICHARD BOONE of Virginia the land he had bought
from the government for $1,000. It is believed he moved from Tuscarawas
County to Morrow County, Ohio; then later to Noble County, Ohio, in 1852.
(Note: Six more generations shown, many of which went to Ohio, Iowa,
Arkansas, California, etc.)
2. AMOS TRUMBO is mentioned in Bath County, Kentucky, Deed Book E as having
purchased a tract of land from JOHN TRUMBO in 1804. Apparently after his
death hs wife, Abagail, married a SIMMONS and lived in Tuscarawas County,
Ohio. She sold the Bath County land by two deeds. Before this when the land
of MICHAEL TRUMBO, her brother-in-law, was being disposed of, she was living
in Kentucky and gave her power of attorney to JOEL ROBINS of Bath County.
Amos and Abagail had one child: SARAH TRUMBO who lived in Kentucky and
apparently later in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. She married DICKSON CLACK or
CLARK, probably CLARK.
3. JACOB TRUMBO is listed in Montgomery County, Kentucky tax lists in 1797
as owning 350 acres on Slate Creek, three horses, and being over twenty-one.
He was also listed in 1799; that year no land was shown but he still had his
three horses. On 13 Jan 1800, his estate was appraised in Montgomery County,
Kentucky by JOHN TRUMBO, ALEXANDER SWIM (probably his brother-in-law) and
JOHN ALKIRE. It was worth eighty-three pounds nine shillings and included
gunsmith and blacksmith tools, saddle, copper ware, hogs, household
furniture, and a grindstone. BETSY TRUMBO was appointed the admnistrator;
she was probably the widow. They had the one child mentioned in her
grandfather's will. JACOB TRUMBO married ELIZABETH DOWNEY 22 Nov 1798 in
Montgomery County, Kentucky. Child: Sarah TRUMBO.
4. PRESLEY NEVILLE TRUMBO was born 21 May 1788 in Allegheney County,
Pennsylvania. He married Susannah HOLMES. She was born 27 Nov 1804 in
Harrison County, Ohio. She is buried in Wayne County, Iowa. They had
fourteen children.
5. MICHAEL TRUMBO, is mentioned in Bath County, Kentucky, records in Deed
Book A. It states he lived in Mifflin Township of Allegheny County,
Pennsylvania. He owned 238 3/4 acres at the Forks of Licking and Slate in
Bath County which he sold to John KEITHLEY.
One history book states Michael had sons George and Presley. This is proved
incorrect by deeds in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. On 24 Nov 1814, Michael
purchased the SE/4 of Sec. 25, T 14, R 7 from the land office at
Steubenville and received a deed for it from President James Madison.
Subsequent deeds by his brothers and sisters show he died intestate and his
land in Tuscarawas County went to his ten brothers and sisters or their
heirs. If he had been married or had children, the land would not have gone
to his brothers and sisters. When he died, the land left to him by his
father in Allegheny County reverted to his brother, George.
6. GEORGE TRUMBO was born 30 Apr 1794 in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania; he
died 10 Jun 1876 and is buried in his family cemetery. On 11 Jan1827, he
married Sarah READER. She was born 11 June 1800 in Washington County,
Pennsylvania, and died 28 July 1876 and is buried beside her husband. They
had seven children. (Several more generations shown.)
7. MARGARET TRUMBO, was born 1770-1775 and died about 1835. Tax lists in
Fleming County, Kentucky, indicate Margaret's husband was ALEXANDER SWIM.
Alexander first appeared in Montgomery County, Kentucky, tax lists in 1799
as being over twenty-one years of age owning one horse. In 1800, 1802, and
1803, he owned 50 acres of land on Slate Creek; the number of horses varied
from one to four. He did not appear in Montgomery County tax lists after
1804. In 1810, the first year tax lists are available for Fleming County,
Alexander appears owning one horse. He had two horses in 1811 and four in
1813. Apparently he died in 1813 or 1814 for Margaret is listed in 1814 as
owning three horses. In 1815, the "Widow Swim" had five horses. It is
possible he died in the War of 1812 because an ALEXANDER SWIM served in the
war. She had four horses in 1818 and was not subject to pay the levy. In
1819 she had 100 acres on TRIPLETT Creek and one horse. She continued to own
ths 100 acres until 1831 when she had only 40 acres. In her will she
mentioned eight children. It s believed there were nine. Their children:
1. Sarah SWIM was born about 1794. She married Robert HENDERSON 18 March
1811 in Fleming County, KY.
2. Trumbo SWIM was born about 1798. He married Susannah HELPHINSTINE 2
Aug 1814 in Fleming County. She was born in 1804, the daughter of PHILLIP
and REBECCA HELPHINSTINE. By 1820 he was a landowner having 50 acres on Fox
Creek. He continued to own it through tax lists checked (1831). They had two
sons and a daughter born between 1810-1820. (Names not given.)
3. John SWIM was born about 1800. He was first listed in 1819 as owning
a horse before he was twenty-one. He had only a horse until 1824 when he
owned 50 acres on Triplett Creek. He continued to own it through the records
checked (1831). He married Jane McROBERTS 8 Oct 1818 in Fleming County. By
1830 they had four children, a son and dau born 1820-15 and two sons born
1825-1830 (names not given.)
4 . Barbara SWIM was born 1800-1804. She married Daniel HAMM 5 May 1817
in Fleming County. By 1830 they had three sons and two daughters (names not
given.)
5. Michael SWIMM was born about 1803. He first appeared in tax lists in
1821 as owning a horse before he was twenty-one. In 1824 he owned 50 acres
on Triplett Creek but this was the only year.
6. Asahel M. SWIMM was born about 1808. He owned 55 acres on Triplett
Creek in 1829 and 1831.
7. Taylor SWIMM was born 1805-1810.
8. Alexander SWIMM was born bout 1810. He was listed as owning a horse
in 1831.
9. Robert SWIMM was born about 1810-1814.
8. BRIDGET TRUMBO married a LAW or LOWE or LOVE. It is possible her husband
was the JONATHAN LOWE who cried her father's sale and bought some of the
dishes. Her part of her father's estate was paid to her attorney, John
McMILLAN. It is not known where she lived but there were numerous LOWES,
LAWS, and LOVES in Tuscarawas and Harrison County, Ohio, A John McMILLAN
also lived in Harrison County, Ohio.
9. CLARISSA TRUMBO, WAS BORN 1780-1790. She married Daniel McMILLAN and they
lived in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, later Harrison County, Ohio. He bought the
NW/4 of Sec7, Twp14, R7 from the government and received a deed for it from
President James Madison 16 Mar 1815. He subsequently purchased another
parcel in 1818 and two others in 1826. He bought Amos TRUMBO's share of
Michael TRUMBO's land from Amos' daughter, Sally, in 1825 for $10 and three
other shares from Enoch TRUMBO in 1826 for $50. It appears from the 1820 and
1830 census records of Tuscarawas County, Ohio, and the 1840 census of
Harrison County, Ohio that they had five children, three boys and two girls.
There were so many McMILLAN and McMULLAN families in Harrison Co. that it is
hard to determine exactly whch children were theirs without a closer
investigation of Harrison County records. Daniel was born about 1780. In his
will, he left money to three of his grandchildren of his daughter, Margaret,
and the rest of his money to the rest of her children. The will was written
in 1852 and probated in December of 1854. Besides land he owned in Ohio, he
owned two original land warrants in Bremer County, Iowa. (Two more
generations shown.)
10. *MARY TRUMBO married JAMES ROBBINS and they lived in Kentucky. The 1800
census of Kentucky shows JAMES ROBBINS living in Montgomery County,
Kentucky.
JAMES ROBBINS first appears in the Montgomery County tax lists in 1800 as
being over twenty-one years of age and owning one horse. Census records
indicate he was born about 1770. She was born about 1776 in Pennsylvania.
In 1801 he still had just one horse but by 1803 he owned 200 acres on Slate
Creek. Some years this land was shown on Licking River, Clover Creek, or
Slate Creek or Prickley Ash Creek, but it was the same land. He continued to
own this land throughout his life though the area became Bath County in
1811. In 1806, 1807, and 1809, he had a second tract of 100 acres on Slate
Creek on Licking River. The number of horses varied from one to ten through
the years. The number of cattle listed varied from three to ten. In 1813,
1814, 1815, he was in TRUMBO's Company of militia. In 1816 and 1817, he was
in OWINGS Company. In 1822, he was in JOHNSON's Company. The value of his
land varied from $6 to $25 per acre. One year, he was listed as JIMMY
ROBBINS. His total taxable value reached $6,610 in 1839. It appears from
census, tax, and marriage records that they had at least nine children and
possibly others. His will recorded in Bath County shows he died between 25
Sept and 14 Nov 1842. The home place on Slate Creek consisted of 250 acres
at that time. He left the farm to JOHN and ANDREW, his personal estate to
his wife, and money to JOEL, ANNA, PEGGY, and REBECCA. Two of his daughters,
SALLY and POLLY, were "afflicted...confined to a bed of sickness." He made
provisions for them should they recover or remain ill. His estate when
inventoried included among other things: five horses, one yoke of steers,
two hay stacks, one third rick of oats, two bushels of buckwheat,
twenty-eight barrels of corn, two screw augars, one loom, fifteen chairs
with bottoms, and one rifle and horn which totaled $858.
The only deed of record to JAMES ROBBINS in Bath County was in 1827 when he
bought 200 acres from Isaac COOK of Scott County for one hundred pounds. In
1827, they gave their power of attorney to JOEL ROBBINS of Bath County,
Kentucky.
JAMES and MARY (TRUMBO) ROBBINS' children were:
1. ANNA ROBBINS was born about 1800 in Kentucky. She married SAMUEL
WEBSTER 11 July 1821. They had at least four children. Samuel was born about
1795. They lived on SHROUT's Branch of Slate Creek. He bought 94 acres on
Slate Creek from Benjamn W. DUDLEY of Fayette County in 1837. In 1840, he
sold the 94 acres to John TRUMBO. In 1854, he bought 173 acres from Robert
WICKLIFFE of Fayette County on Rose Run Creek near the poor house tract. In
1855, he bought fifteen acres on Slate Creek from JAMES A. GARNER.

in 1824 as being over twenty-one years of age. Through 1838, he was listed
with three to five horses. In 1839, he had 123 acres of land, three horses,
and ten cattle. He did not have the land in 1840. He was first mentoned in
Bath County deeds in 1830 in an arrangement with a man whose property he had
bought at a sheriff's sale. In 1855 he bought his sister, SALLY'S, interest
in his half interest in the farm on Prickley Ash Creek. In 1856, he bought
89 acres on Nailors Branch from two groups of heirs. In 1863, he and the
other heirs sold 25 acres of ths land to ALEXANDER McNEIL. JOHN and ELIZA
ANN (RANDOLPH) ROBBINS' children were: (1) WILLIAM H. ROBBINS was born about
1832 in Kentucky. He married Cornelia and they had at least two children:

Bath County tax lists was 1829 when he was over twenty-one and owned three
horses. It is not known what happened to Joel but he was still living in
1842 when his father died. Ripley County, Indiana, marriage records show a
JOEL ROBBINS married LYDIA RYAN 20 Jan 1827. It is possible this is our
Joel.
4. MARGARET "PEGGY" ROBBINS was born about 1806. She married JOHN
RICHARDS 26 Dec 1825 in Bath County, Kentucky. He was born 1800 to 1810.

It appears from 1820 and 1830 census records of Tuscarawas County, Ohio, and
the 1840 and 1850 census records of Harrison County, Ohio, that John and
Charlotte possibly had fourteen children.
(If you have Bath and surrounding county names which may connect to these
Trumbos, please let me know and I'll see if the book contains your names.)
