Pioneer Woman
Head of a Family of Seven Children, 32 grandchildren and 40 great
grandchildren

Mrs. Nancy Grover, living with her daughter, Mirah Clark, three miles
east of Jamestown, in Hendricks County, passed her 84th birthday last
September the 28th, and besides being and old pioneer of this section is
distinguished as being at the head of a large family of children, grand
children and great grandchildren. Like most old settlers she has an
interesting life's story and it is a pleasure to hear her tell of the
good old days when this country was new and sparsely settled.
Her maiden name was Nancy Hendricks and she was born 28 September 1821,
near Centerville, Wayne County, Indiana, and moved with her parents to
Hendricks County when but a small girl. She was the daughter of Jesse
and Mary Hendricks.
On 11 April 1839, she was married to James H. Grover, who was born in
Bath County, Kentucky 27 May 1819. He came to Indiana with his parents
when ten years old and setteled in Rush County. In 1887 he moved to
Union Township, Hendricks County, on the farm where Charlie Elder now
resides. At the time of his marriage he was only 19 years of age and he
had to remain with his father until he was twenty one to work out his
"raising". When he and his young wife began working for themselves.
Mr. Grover would work all day for his neighbors and at night would split
rails and build fencing around his place. For a day's work he received
25¢ in cash or 33½c. Payable in flour, meat, potatoes, etc.
To this couple were born fourteen children, seven of whom are living.
They are John, Levi B., Jas. U., Ellis B., Mellissa, Emma M., and
Francis M., all of whom reside in Hendricks County with in radius of two
miles of each other. There are thirty two grandchildren and forty great
grandchildren living. The following grandchildren are as follows; Anna
D. Vanhorn, N.S. Grover, Eva Cornelius, Oder Grover, Effie Gossett,
Ora Grover, Gertie Bryant, Claude Grover, Homer Charley, Arthur and
Harvey Caldwell, Elmer Gardner, Sarah Ingram, Nannie Patterson,
Charley Elder, Austin Clark, Vernie Arnold, Oscar, Emma, Lizzie,
Dorotha, Carl, Isa, Ernest and Zola Grover.
5 October 1899, Mrs. Grover was left a widow by the death of her
husband who had been the partner of her life for more than sixty years.
This sturdy couple had during their long labors together accumulated
quite a nice little competency and at the time of Mr. Grover's death he
owned over 500 acres of good land. Mrs. Grover united with the Baptist
Church years ago and now calmly awaits the time she will be summonsed
home.
