From The Oak Ridger 13 Aug 2004
Lorraine Powers of Oak Ridge died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, at Methodist
Medical Center of Oak Ridge, after a courageous battle with cancer, her family
said. Born in Pruden, she was the daughter of Lawrence and Bessie Loveday and grew
up in Oliver Springs and Fonde, Ky. She taught elementary school in Pruden
before moving to Oak Ridge in 1953 with her husband, Chester Powers, and their
two children. She and her family joined Robertsville Baptist Church in 1954,
and she remained an active member, teaching Sunday School and serving on various
church committees. She was particularly committed to the church's mission
work through the Women's Missionary Union and represented the church at state and
national conventions. Mrs. Powers was employed at Loveman's Department Store
and was a former owner and operator of Hilltop Laundromat. In the 1960s, she
answered a call to assist the Oak Ridge city school system as a bus driver and
developed many long lasting relationships with the students she served. Soon
afterwards she, joined OR TEC, where she was employed until her retirement in
1991. According to her family, her life centered on her family, her faith, her
friends, and her country. She is remembered for her ability to find the good
in everyone, and for providing encouragement to those who were burdened with
the struggles of life. Her loving joyous smile and warm hugs are treasured by
all those who knew her and her laughter will warm them forever. She enjoyed
bowling, gardening, ceramics, and various crafts. She authored "Memories of
Fonde," a five-volume collection of memories of former Fonde, Ky., residents, which
is housed in the Bell County Kentucky Historic Society. She was a devoted
University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge High School Wildcat fan, and committed to
the mission of the Boys Club of Oak Ridge. She was preceded in death by her
parents, her brother, Paul Loveday, and her son-in-law, Kenny Weaver. In addition
to her husband, Mrs. Powers is survived by her children, Carol Powers Weaver
of Knoxville and James Powers of Oak Ridge; two grandchildren, Ashley Weaver
and Aaron Weaver, both of Knoxville; her sister and brother-in-law, Faye Loveday
Yakel and Harry Yakel of Clinton; a nephew, Tommy Roseberry of Clinton; and a
niece, Paula Renee Porier and her husband, Tracy, of Knoxville. The funeral
will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at Robertsville Baptist Church. A
graveside service will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family will
receive friends from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the church. The family requests that
