#4386: Memorial Record of Western Kentucky, Lewis Publishing Company, 1904,
p 527 [McCracken] PHILIP D. YEISER, deceased, was a native of
Lancaster, Kentucky, where he was born in November, 1817, and was reared in
Danville, where in early life he followed contracting and building, and
also operated a foundry. He then prepared for the profession of law, and
practiced first at Eddyville, Kentucky. In 1861 he located in Paducah, and
practiced law until his death, which occurred in 1886. He was commonwealth
attorney one term and about a year prior to his death was elected city
judge of Paducah, an office he held when he died. In politics he was a
Republican, while fraternally he was a member of the Independent Order of
Odd Fellows. In religious belief he lived and died a Presbyterian. Judge
Yeiser was several times married, his first wife, Ellen Deerham, a native
of Boyle county, Kentucky, and she became the mother of David A. Yeiser,
now mayor of Paducah.
#4387: Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 2nd
ed., 1885, McLean Co. DR. WILLIAM L. CRANDELL, McLean County, was born
August 16, 1844, in Bullitt County, Ky., and is the son of Dr. Samuel W.
and Margaret (Goff) Crandell, natives of Brandenburg and Nelson Counties,
Ky., respectively. Dr. Samuel W. Crandell (subject's father) was first
lieutenant in the Eight[h] Kentucky Federal Cavalry for eighteen months,
after which he became assistant surgeon of the regiment; he resigned in
1864, and returned home. The mother of subject was a daughter of Edwin
Goff, who married Elizabeth Thurman, both natives of Virginia. Subject
received a common school education, and in June, 1862, enlisted in Company
I, Sixth Kentucky Cavalry, under Capt. Ed. Penn. He participated in the
battles of Chickamauga, Resaca and Nashville and was in numerous skirmishes
with Morgan's men; went with Sherman on his march to the sea, as far as
Macon, Ga. He was discharged in June, 1865, at Nashville, as second
sergeant, and returned to his home in Louisville, Ky., where he engaged as
salesman in a general store for ten months. Then moved to Sacramento,
McLean, County; engaged in saw-milling one year, and then returned to
Louisville, and attended a course at the Kentucky School of Medicine in the
winter of 1867-68; same spring he located in Ashbysburgh, Hopkins County,
and commenced practice. In 1870, he moved to Hamilton County, Mo., and in
1872, to southern Illinois; in 1874, he located in Slaughterville, Webster
County, and one year later located at Beach Grove, where he has been
engaged in his profession ever since, except eighteen months at Lewisport,
Hancock County. He was married December 21, 1870, to Mrs. Mary Saunders of
Saline County, Mo., a daughter of Lemuel G. Tucker; she died in February,
1876. He afterward married May 21, 1878, Georgia E. Harper, of McLean
County, a daughter of John H. and C. E. (Walters) Harper, who were born
respectively in Pennsylvania in 1812, and Wheeling, W. Va., in 1822.
Two children were born to this union, one of whom is still living. Dr.
Crandell is a member of the Masonic order, and a Democrat. He gave his
first vote for George B. McClellan, and his last for Grover Cleveland. He
is at present chairman of the board of village trustees, and the board of
education.

WILLIAM R. SANFORD: Mr. Sanford was born in Mercer County, Kentucky,
February 13, 1796; was united in marriage to Elizabeth Threlkeld in
Kentucky, in the year 1819. Mrs. Sanford was born in Shelby County,
Kentucky, November 12, 1794. She died September, 1876; is buried at the
Shannondale Cemetery. This worthy couple came to Jefferson Township, in
1835, when that part of the county was quite new and undeveloped. When
they first came their neighbors were scattered; a heavy forest in every
direction. Nothing but strong hands and determination would have succeeded
in making a home in the new country. Mr. Sanford is yet living with his
daughter, Mrs. T. J. Stipe, at the age of ninety years. The following are
their children; Eveline, Martha, John T., George, Yewell, Thomas W., Jane,
Elisha, Sally, Hiram, Samuel R. and James H. The following are deceased:
John and Elisha, are buried at the Shannondale Cemetery in Montgomery
County, Indiana.

ed., 1886. Metcalfe County. JAMES A. WITHERS was born November 4, 1847,
in Hart County, Ky., where he was reared to manhood. In 1867 he located in
the north part of Metcalfe County, where he has since resided. His father,
James Withers, a native of Barren County, is now living at the age of
seventy-six years. He is the son of Charles and Rhoda Withers, Virginians,
who removed to Kentucky about the year 1808. Charles was a soldier in the
war of 1812, and died in 1872. James Withers married Susan, daughter of
Reuben Kelley, of Barren County (now living, aged sixty-eight years), and
to them have been born Melinda (Withers), John S., Thomas V., Charles R.,
James A., Jared C., Ellen S. (Edwards) and America R.(Grinstead). In youth
James A. procured a common English education at the district schools of the
vicinity in which he was reared. On December 27, 1871, he espoused in
marriage, Eliza A., daughter of William M. and Harriet (Ralston) True, of
Metcalfe County (born June 21, 1848), and from their union there has been
no issue. At the commencement of their united career, with only a small
patrimony, Mr. and Mrs. Withers, with courageous hearts, began to solve the
problem of life by relying for success upon their own exertions, and by
industry and frugality have secured a comfortable competence. Mr. Withers
is a farmer, owning eighty-five acres of tolerably well improved and
productive land in a good state of cultivation. He is an active member of
the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and in politics is a stanch Republican.

ed., 1886. Monroe County. WILLIAM Y. WOOD was born May 16, 1843, in
Fentress County, Tenn., where he grew to manhhood, and in 1875 removed to
the southern part of Monroe County, Ky., where he has since resided. In
1863 he enlisted in the First Kentucky Federal Cavalry, and remained in the
service twenty months. His father, Jesse Wood, a native of North Carolina,
is now living in his seventy-fourth year. He represented Fentress and
Scott Counties in the Tennessee Legislature, and was loyal to his country
in the late war. His father was William Wood, of North Carolina. Jesse
Wood married Matilda, daughter of John and Abigail Baty, of Fentress County
(died in 1883), and from their union sprang John B., Thomas F., David H.,
Matthew B., William Y., Pleasant B., Doctor D. and Mary J (Mulinax,
deceased). William Y. obtained his education in the schools in the vicinity
in which he as reared. He married, November 9, 1865, Martha J., daughter
of James and Betsey (Batey) King, of Fentress County, born May 2, 1841, and
to them have been born Leon (Givin), Thomas F., James A., Jesse B., Mary
J., William D., Mariantha E., Theodosia, Ada B. and Cleveland (born July
21, 1885.) Mr. Wood is a farmer, having 300 acres of productive land in a
good state of cultivation. He is a member of the Baptist Church, and in
politics a Democrat.
