By the way, I agree about the annotated census and the "regular"
transcriiption. Transcribing census records is difficult, and an
"annotated" one is generally helpful, but ANY transcription of ANY record
should have the ORIGINAL CHECKED if at all possible. I found an ancestor,
whose name was "Shemwell" indexed under TRAMMELL. When I checked the
original record, I found that the guy who worte the original record made
his S's look like "T's" and thus, Smith became Tmith. It was really easy to
see why the transcriber made that mistake. Original records where they are
even partly available are best source of reliable info, but unfortunately,
many people "do genealogy" only from the net and from only transcribed
records. In some cases, that is all that is available to them (or anyone)
and the net is GREAT for genealogy because it gets us together to "cuss and
discuss": and share and exchange ideas and information, but if it is the
ONLY tool and ONLY 'research" that is done, then it can lead to some grave
errors. Keep up the good work. Joyce Hetrick
