I have some Cope/Gillum info to list and I hope this helps and by the way I
have exchanged Cope family info with Crystal.
Here is the linage of Louisa Cope who married James Gillum ca 1862 in
Breathitt Co KY.
Louisa Cope b) 1845 Breathitt Co KY dau. of Wiley H. Cope and Susannah Strong
marr. ca 1840 Breathitt Co KY.
Wiley H. Cope b) 1819 in Clay Co KY - son of James P. Cope & Mary " Polly "
Hammond/s who were marr. ca 1806 Montgomery Co KY.
Susannah Strong b) 1822 KY is the dau. of William Strong & Jemima Deaton.
James P. Cope b) 1786 Washington Co VA is the son of James & Elizabeth Cope
listed in Floyd Co KY 1810-1820.
Louisa Cope had 2 other sisters who married Gillums'.
Delilah Cope -M- Harvey Gillum- ca 1863 and Isabella Cope -M- Charles Martin
Gillum ca 1873.
The Cope family lived in the Frozen Creek area before 1810 to 1900.
I would like to add that if anyone has a Cope in their family in Breathitt Co
KY I might have info for them.
I would also like to add ( I have not seen this listed for awhile ) to check
out the book called " In The Land of Breathitt " first printing in 1941 by the
University of KY.Also listed as " Bloody Breathitt " and there are plenty of
stories on the fueds in that county.I also found info on Breathitt Co KY in
the " John Dickey Diary " a traveling Preacher who interviewed families for
over 30 years ( 1870-1900 ).John's Diary is 3,000 pages long and he
interviewed a relative William Jackson Cope in 1898 and William listed all
his family all the way back to James & Elizabeth Cope who lived in 1810 Floyd
Co KY.John Dickey wanted to know every ones family as far back as they could
remember.
I got a copy of the book " In the Land of Breathitt " by inter-library loan
for a $2.00 charge.I know that some libraries will let you take the books home
and some keep them in the library up to 4 weeks to review by researchers.I
also found that if your Ancestor lived in a county when it was organized
chances are you will find some one in your family listed as the first settler
there.I sent away for county histories in MO 1830-40 and TX 1850-1880 and
found great info on my Cope families there. All this for 2.00 $ for each
county/state history.I photo copied each page with my family in it at the
library and took it home.
One more clue to watch for when searching for family and that is many families
in the 1700s and 1800 used the wife's surnmame as a first name for their
children.I found in many Cope and related families names like Harris,
Bradford, Martin,Mason, Wallace, Williamson, Herd, Calloway, Smith, Bird, ect
and as many of you know they were used as middle names as well.
Sincerely, David C. Cope- CA
P.S. My brother was born in Deming,New Mexico in 1949 and I was 2 then.
