NO.15 EXCERPTS JACKSON
KENTUCKY
> -A Chance for Everybody
> > We have made up our minds not only to deserve success but to have it. In
> order to achieve this we must have the co-operation of our friends. To
> increase the reasons for expecting their help we to-day offer a list of
> premiums as rewards for those who are willing to assist in spreading the
> HUSTLER all over this 'Promised Land" There is a higher motive to prompt
> this action than the premiums. In getting your friend to take the HUSTLER
> you are putting into his hands an instrument for his improvement. By reading
> its columns he will become both a wiser and a better man. A good newspaper
> is a great civilizer, a great elevator. The press of to-day is moulding the
> sentiment of the world. It is for these ends that we are publishing this
> paper, and for these reasons we ask your aid. Here is the list:
> > FOR ONE YEAR---1 subscriber, 1 dozen lead pencils. 3 subscribers, 1
> history of the U.S. in Monosyllables. 5 subscribers, 1 silver
> butter knife. 6 subscribers, 1 child's set, silver knife, fork and
> teaspoon. 7 subscribers, 1 silver cup. 8 or 9 subscribers, 1 set of
> silver teaspoons. 10 subscribers, 1 Webster's Unabridged Dictionary.
> 12 subscribers, 1 silver butter dish. This offer will be open till May
> 1,1891. The name may be sent in one at a time or all together, only the
> money must accompany the name. Send in your own way, and at your own
> expense. We will send the premiums as soon as the money is received, whether
> the names come or not. Be sure to give the name of the post-office and
> county of each subscriber plainly written. Renewels are not included. This
> list is made out on the gospel plan; every man is rewarded according to his
> works. Each one will get the premium he earns. There will be as many of each
> kind as may be needed. The names of the workers will be published as the
> premiums are awarded. Address all communications to THE JACKSON HUSTLER

> > Daily Mails to Hazard and Hindman
> > The Government has advertised for bids to carry the United States mails,
> six days a week, from Jackson to Hazard and from Jackson to Hindman, the
> line to be put on July 1, 1891. This is pleasing intelligence. This was
> promised to begin last November, but the time was put off on account of the
> failure of the railroad to reach Jackson with the mails as it was expected
> to do. While the trains do not reach Jackson yet by three miles, horseback
> route, the mails come directly here when the train arrives at the station.
> The necessity for this route is evidenced by a letter from Hazard in this
> issue which says that seven days is about as soon as a letter can make the
> round trip, though it is only 35 miles. This arrangement will give our
> sister towns the city papers the next day after they are published. The
> Louisseville And Cincinnati papers reach here the day of publication. We
> would like to thank somebody for the prospect of these mail facilities ; we
> will thank the Lord who is the first great cause.
