Louise Hatmaker, 79, Publisher/Journalist, Dies
Louise Hatmaker, 79, was a pioneer woman journalist in Appalachia, starting
her career as a reporter for the Hazard Herald Newspaper. She died on Sunday
in Hazard. Hatmaker was the former editor, publisher, and owner of the Jackson
Times and Beattyville Enterprise, and was inducted into the Kentucky
Journalism Hall of Fame earlier this year. She was proud of her her Kentucky mountain
heritage, and traced her lineage through her mother, Zada Baker Combs Bolton,
to John Combs, an Englishman who crossed the Atlantic on the Magnolia and
landed at Jamestown in 1619; since 1735, six generations of Combses have claimed
Eastern Kentucky as home, and produced such notables as Governor Bert Combs
and the immortal Earle Combs, who played the outfield for the New York Yankees
with a 12 year batting average of .325.
Louise Hatmaker is survived by one daughter - Cynthia Segers of Spring, TX.,
one brother - Newell Bolton of Hilton Head, S.C., and two grandchildren.
Visitation will take place from 6 until 8 pm Friday at the Engle Walker Funeral
Home in Hazard. The funeral will be held at the First Baptist Church on
Saturday. Burial will follow in the Baker Family Cemetery in Hazard.
