how about this...
Since Sarah Smith, daughter of Edward Smith, sister to Margaret Smith who
married George Gabbard...is this the Sarah Smith married to the John Bowman
that had a son Elijah Bowman in 1795 that married in 1814 to Hannah Gabbard
born 1807, daughter of Jacob Gabbard and Margaret Smith, then to my
relationship with Hannah Gabbard is she being my 5th great grandaunt...and
Jacob and Margaret Smith Gabbard are my 6th great grandparents. (neat-0)
Then Christian Bowman would be the father of John Bowman, father of Elijah
Bowman born 1795.
Okay..found another paper article it reads: Jackson County Paper 1900

eyesight. he was born in Washington County, va in 1813 and he came here in
early youth and has lived here ever since. Mr. gabbard has fice children,
three sons and two daughters."

another paper article:
1944 Commonwealth of Ky:Berea....
Sunday night, the 18th, Lewis C. Gabbard crossed the beyound. His departure
was no surprise, as he had been battling with comsumption for several
years. During a residence of more than twenty years in Berea, or the
immdiate vicinity, his influence had been felt for the right on all
questions pertaining to temperance, good order and the well being of the
community. he was well informed on public matters and was deeply interested
in national affairs and was pre-eminently a man of convictions. Quiet and
unassuming in manner, he was true to his friends and delighted in the
associations clustering around this own fireside.
he was a member of the Church of Christ and but a short time before his
death there was a delightful service hoeld at his home for him to partake
of the Lords Supper with a number belonging to the church. he showed deep
faith and faced the King with composure.
Mr. Gabbard was 61 years old. He was born in Estill County from which he
enlisted in the 8th Ky regiment at the beginning of the war. He was
assigned to the 4th Ky after re-enlistment and served faithfully till the
conclusion of peace. for several years he had been a member of Capt. James
West Post. G.A.R. of which he has been a commander. He was a most faithful
and beloved member. His influence had much to do with the Post taking the
position so unusual in the South, of admitting worthy colored veterans on
the same terms as whites.
Funeral exercises were held on Monday afternoon, at the family residence on
Center Street. Dr. burgess gave an earnest and effective discourse followed
by feeling remarks from Comrades L.V. Dodge, L.C. Duncan and Horace Yates.
The remains were conveyed to the Berea cemetery and were consigned to rest
by the members of the G.A.R. Post with simple ceremonies. The bereaved
wife, three sons and two daughters are all living in Berea area.
