HOW ADDIE REGAINED HER PENSION

By Jess Wilson

Addie Estridge-Noe was a first cousin to my Grandmother Melda Estridge-Pigg. You could also say that Addie was not "Behind the door when the smarts were handed out."

During the first World War she married a soldier whose surname was Noe. During the war Noe was killed and afterwards Addie had a widow`s pension.

Addie also liked to gossip. She knew and needed practically no prodding to tell you of every scandal that had happened in the family since Cain killed his brother Abel. Her manner of relating the latest she had heard was in the form of a question. "Did you know that so and so is stepping out on his wife?"

Addie lived with her aging parents and with frugal management she saved most of her pension money. She would somehow let you know that she had money "earning interest" in the Jackson County Bank.

Soon a shyster came her way and the Widow Nos was once more a married woman. They lived high but as soon as Addie`s small fortune was gone, so was the shyster and so was Addie`s pension.

However, Addie shrewdly thought of a solution. She talked one of her neighbors into having herself brought before the Jackson County Court and declared an incompetent thereby the marriage was annulled and the pension restored.
