Subject: Thomas Jefferson PIERCE from Clinton Co. to Barry Co., MO?
Date: Mon, 3 Jul 2006 20:43:00 -0500
I found the tax list below in a library in Independence, Missouri, on microfilm. My Thomas J. PIERCE was born in KY, married and had four children--James M. PIERCE born 1848, Eliza J. PIERCE, Malinda C. PIERCE, Rachel PIERCE, and then by 1859 Thomas J. PIERCE was a widower remarrying in Barry County, Missouri. The only thing I know about my Thomas J. PIERCE's first wife is that her maiden name was JONES, and she was born in KY.
On the 1850 census Clinton County, KY, I found a Jefferson Pierce age 22, wife Martha 18, son James aged 2. It's very difficult finding information about the Pierces below because the courthouse burned during the Civil War. I know that Francis Pierce was the father of Lewis Pierce. Ambrose Pierce married Anna Young. One of Ambrose Pierce's daughters married a Rev. Ballinger Wright. I'm having great difficulty finding the connection between these three--Francis, Lewis, Ambrose--and Thomas Jefferson Pierce. Maybe there is none; however, they all paid taxes on land they owned on Smith's Creek in Clinton County, Kentucky.
I'd be happy to share with anyone researching the PIERCE family in Clinton County.
Sincerely,
Gene Kathryn Johnson
Kentucky Tax Lists Clinton County 1837-1861, Roll # 84
1838
Francis Pierce, Lewis Pierce, William Pierce, Ambrose Pierce
1839-1845 Same four Pierces on tax list. Location says Smith's Creek.
1846 Same four Pierces as above but now adds Jefferson Pierce
1847 Francis Pierce, Francis Pierce (Jr.?), Lewis Pierce, James Pierce, Ambrose Pierce, Jefferson Pierce, William Pierce.
1848 Francis Pierce Sr., Francis Pierce Jr., Ambrose Pierce, William F. Pierce, William Pierce, Jefferson Pierce, James Pierce.
1849 F. M. Pierce, Jefferson Pierce, William Pierce, James Pierce, Lewis Pierce, William S. Pierce. (I may have overlooked Ambrose on this one.)
1850 Francis Pierce, Jefferson Pierce, Lewis Pierce, Ambrose Pierce.
1851 Francis Pierce Sr., Francis Pierce, Jefferson Pierce, James Pierce, Lewis Pierce, William Pierce.
1852 Francis Pearse (tax man this year couldn't spell), Lewis Pearse, Ambrose Pearse, William Pearse, Thos. J. Pearse.
1853 Ambrose Pearce, Jefferson Pearce, Arthur H. Pearce (Illwill Creek), Lewis Pearce (still Smith's Creek).
1854 Ambrose Pierce, Francis M. Pierce, Lewis Pierce, T. J. Pierce. One interesting thing...although this was a tax list, each individual was asked how many children who live in your home are between the ages of 6 and 18. For the first time Thomas Jefferson Pierce lists one--that would be son James Pierce born 1848 and age 2 on 1850 census.
1855 At this point I only copied Thomas J. Pierce. Thomas J. Pierce by now owned 70 acres on Smith's Creek valued at $400, one horse or mule worth $50, five cattle and twelve hogs.
1856 Thomas J. Pearce now owned 73 acres on Smith's Creek, plus his lifestock including hogs, whose number had now increased to 22.
Thomas Jefferson Pierce does not show up on any further tax lists in Clinton County, KY--nor does he appear on the 1860 census there.
