Many Harlan County folks moved "west" to Paint Lick (on the border of Garrard and Madison counties). If yours was among them or you'd like to know more about this area, first settled in 1774, then read on to learn more about a new quarterly magazine: Paint Lick Reflections.
The premiere issue was printed this month (April) and includes stories about the first Presbyterian Church here (many names); the first excerpts from the 200-page account book of a Lowell doctor with accounts from 1876-1896 (includes the complete index of names); photos and stories about the Estridge family (who may have been from Harlan County); cover story about the Kentucky Mountain Boy Bradley Kincaid (recently inducted into the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame in Renfro Valley); pages of genealogical queries; humorous stories by Carita Brents and Ike Adams; and more. There are also two modern-day stories about almost 84-year-old Dean Cornett, who was "born in the shadow of a coal tippel in Harlan County."
The cost of a single copy is $6.42 for Kentucky residents ($6 outside Kentucky). Or get all four issues (April, July, October, January) for only $21.20 in Kentucky ($20 outside the state). The 40-page first issue is printed on high-quality paper and I am told will be a collectors' item. (Only 800 copies in the initial printing of the first issue.)
Genealogical and reunion queries related to Paint Lick (or Garrard and Madison counties) are welcome, too! (No charge and you don't have to be a subscriber, although they will be given space preference.)
