Hello,

You are quite right about nothing being absolutely "for sure". I am often amused when someone thinks an ancestor isn't theirs because the age is off by 2 or 3 years. I have seen ages be off 10 years. I have seen them reported younger in one census than the previous census of 10 yrs. prior.

In the cases of my maternal gg-grandparents, William "Martin" SERGENT and his wife, Elizabeth Ann HOWARD, buried at the Howard Cem., Rosspoint, Harlan Co., their double marker very clearly says 1926. Imagine my surprise when I obtained their death certificates and BOTH stated 1928. Since they died within a week of one another, it is doubtful that in both cases the death record would be off by two years. At first I thought I had just looked at the stone incorrectly. But, no, it says 1926 and their death records say 1928.

Sorry I could not help you locate your ancestor. I looked also in the 1900 Lee Co., VA and in the 1900 Claiborne Co., TN. He is not listed there either.
