Moisant and Hoxey Meet Death the Last Day of Old Year

John B. Moisant and Arch Hoxey, aviators extra-ordinary, were killed today.
Moisant died at 9:15 a.m. trying to alight in a field a few miles north of
New Orleans. Hoxey died at 2:12 p.m. at Los Angeles.
The total deaths for 1910 was 35. Moisant, a Chicagoian by birth, after an
adventurous life in Central America, became interested in aviation in France
less than a year ago. He soared into public recognition through his plucky
flight from Paris across the English Channel to London with a passenger, and
later finding himself without a machine, by buying one from a friend and
within ten minutes starting on his winning flight from Belmont Park, New York
around the Statute of Liberty, for a prize of $10,000.
[Note: The International Airport in New Orleans is now called the Louis
Armstrong International Airport but is located on Moisant Field which was named
for John Moisant in 1940. dh]
Arch Hoxey, after a year of uniform success with the Wright aeroplane, in
which he had come to have a name for fearless and competence in the air, and in
which only within the week, he had set a new world’s altitude record of
11,474 feet and then to show his contempt for the earth had sailed majestically
more than 4,000 feet about the highest mountain in California, ran afoul of
the same kind of shifty, boiling, treacherous wind when a matter of some 500
feet in the air, and a minute, later a horrified crowd, aroused from its
shock, was rushing madly to where a broken mass of humanity lay beneath a torn bit
of canvass and some broken spars.

died rather suddenly at his home near Foster, KY, that she expected to go that
way. Mrs. Hieatt was 63 years, 7 months and 3 days old, and was the daughter
of Mr. & Mrs. Charles and Harriet Dye. Her first husband, John T. Watson,
