I am researching the RANEY and WARFORK families in Calloway County as
well as their family connection. Specifically, I am interested in
learning more about the parentage of NORMEY JEAN RANEY (b. 1852 in SC;
d. 1913 in Calloway Co.). She married (1) John LILLARD, with whom she
had two children (Edward D. and Julius) and with whom she was listed in
the 1870 Marshall Co. Census with both children. He died between 1870
and 1873, supposedly killed during a craps game in the vicinity of
Aurora. She married (2) James Nathaniel BURKEEN, of the large and
well-documented Burkeen family of Calloway Co.

Normey Jean's parents according to her death certificate are OBY RANEY
and NANCY (ROBERTS) RANEY. According to indefinite census records, it
appears that this is the same OBEDIAH H. RANEY/RAINEY and wife Nancy
appearing in the 1850 Greenville Co., SC census and 1860 Polk Co., TN
census. However, Normey is strangely absent from the 1860 census record
when she would have been approx. 8 years old.

Further, family tradition holds that JAMES T. RAINEY, buried in McDaniel
Cemetery in Calloway County with wife LOUISA (MILLER) RAINEY, is the
younger brother of Normey. His birth date (1862) matches exactly that
of a JAMES T. WARFORK who was listed for the first time on the 1880
Calloway Census next door to James and Normey Burkeen. Also in the
Warfork houehold was a Nancy, noted as his grandmother, who birthyear of
1820 and birthplace of SC matches that of Nancy Raney, wife of Obediah
above and supposed mother of Normey. This James T. Warfork is
well-documented through deeds as having bought and sold alot of property
in Calloway County around the turn of the century.

Adding more to this family mystery is that fact that in two 1947
affidavits of descent filed in Calloway County for the purpose of
selling their inherited property because he left no will, the children
and grandchildren of the man buried and known as JAMES T. RAINEY attest
under oath that their father and grandfather was JAMES T. WARFORK
referring to his wife as Louisa Warfork and his two daughters as having
the maiden name of Warfork. However, they always used the name Rainey,
which is well-remembered by living relatives, and documented in records.

By the way, the name RANEY and RAINEY is used interchangeably, although
the correct spelling in this family is RANEY. While being as brief as
possible, I hope someone may provide me with a potential clue to unravel
this continuing genealogical mystery.
