Subject: [KYJacksonPurchase-L] Vital Statistics Records - Calloway County - Births - 1853 - I - Z
Date: Fri, 27 Mar 1998 19:56:06 -0600
My friends -
Tonight, we will move east a few miles and return to Calloway County Vital
Statistics records of births in 1853 for surnames from "I" through "Z". We
looked at "A" through "H" a few days ago. As always, if you would like the
full data on an individual(which includes the date of birth, father's name
and mother's maiden name), let me know and I will get it to you.
Before I post that listing, however, I want to point out a genealogical
myth that has been circulating for years. I saw it again today on another
list, where an individual had stated it as absolute fact and indicated
that, by observing this myth, it can save "years of research time", as she
put it.
The myth has to do with witnesses to wills. The myth says that the first
witness is a member of the groom's family and the second witness is a
member of the bride's family, such as her brother, or father. There are
variations in the myth as to why this is the case. Sometimes it is said
that it is done to "protect the dower rights" of the wife/widow. Other
times, it was done to insure that the members of the family on both sides
were aware of the contents of the will. All of this is sheer nonsense. The
dower rights were protected by law, and the will's contents would become
public knowledge upon the death of the testator. I am not saying that it
never happened that witnesses were from each side of the family - it DID
happen, but it did not happen constantly, and more often than not,
witnesses to wills were whoever happened to be handy at the time, and
often those would be family members. But I have seen wills for which the
witnesses were neighbors, family members, someone who was called in from
the street to witness a will if it was being drawn in a lawyer's office -
the possibilities are endless. However, as always, since we are good and
thorough genealogists, we will check those witnesses out, in case they ARE
family members. There can be clues there. We simply need to avoid putting
any credence in these old genealogical myths, such as this one, and the
"8870 Formula", which I have talked about earlier, among others.
I'll be adding an item or two to the Jackson Purchase Images Page over the
weekend, if all goes well. Which brings me to another item - a question,
actually. I often receive requests for the full data on the postings I put
on the List from two or more people who are asking for the same person.
This would seem to indicate that these folks should also communicate with
each other, since they may share a common line. In the early days of this
List, I had the machinery set up to respond to the List, if you use your
"Reply To" function on your mail program. In this way, everyone will see
what you are requesting and if others are also interested, they can contact
you directly by private e-mail. At the time that the List functioned in
that fashion, I was in the early stages of offering bitmap images of land
grant maps, etc. This was prior to my establishing the Jackson Purchase
Images Page, where all of that is now placed. A number of people asked that
I change the List function so that the "Reply To" function would send the
mail directly to me, since we were getting a lot of messages which simply
said that someone wanted a copy of a map. I changed the function as
requested. But I now wonder if perhaps we are missing some "line matching"
between our subscribers, because all of the requests for data come to me,
and not to the List. I would like for you to let me know, through the List
if you wish, or privately, how you would like this function to be set up,
i.e., do you want all requests for data to come to me privately, or come to
me through the List so that you can see which lines other people are
interested in? Of course, you can always send me a private e-mail at any
time no matter how the List is set up, by just manually addressing a
message to me, without using the "Reply To" function on your mail program.
Let me know what you think I should do in this area. We can leave it like
it is, or have the responses come to the List.
