My friends -

Tonight, we will close out the week with another in the Skills Puzzler
series - this one dedicated to military records.

Before going to that, however, I want to take a moment to welcome the 11
new subscribers who have come to the JP List in the past 48 hours. I invite
them to post their JP research needs here, in the hope that we can assist
them in their endeavors. I also hope that they will visit the Jackson
Purchase Images Page and the JP FAQ site for general questions. Those URL's
were provided in the Welcome Message. The JP List searchable archives is
also available for their use, which contains the 2600 posts made to this
List over the past 15 months, as well as my 275+ data posts. That URL is:

Now, to our puzzler. Here is the scenario: we are trying to gain admittance
to the DAR(for the ladies) or the SAR(for the gentlemen). In researching a
particular ancestor of the name John Jenkins, we are fortunate enough to
find the local militia rolls for the years 1779 and 1781. These are
excellent documents, as they break down the unit into its officers,
non-commissioned officers, drummers, fifes, infantrymen, artillerymen,
cannoneers and messengers. The records are easily readable. We find our
John Jenkins in 1781 on the militia roll in the infantrymen group. One of
his known brothers, Elijah Jenkins, is also on that list as a cannoneer,
and an uncle, Josephus Jenkins, is shown as a messenger. When we go back to
1779, however, we find these three men again in like capacities, but there
is another John Jenkins shown on that list as a cannoneer. The DAR/SAR
wants to know which one of the two John Jenkins we descend from. We have no
record of this new John, but we need to straighten out these lineages
before our application will be accepted. We have good county records, which
we check and turn up nothing. Where do we go from there?

If you want to give it a try, you can post your thoughts to the List, or to
me privately. I'll be back Saturday evening to post the analysis.

As usual, there will be no data posts over the weekend, but I hope to drop
in with another land grant text file or two, and perhaps some other
"unusual" records.
