Subject: [KYJacksonPurchase-L] Skills Puzzler # 17 - Solution & Analysis

On the latest Puzzler, we had some 44 people who communicated their
thoughts on the solution, and 9 of the 44 hit the nail on the head.
Here is the analysis:
Most of the deeds shown in this list would tantalize us, and we would want
to see all of them, but since we had time only to look at one or two, our
best bet would be the deed in which E. Dooright et al., is granting land to
William Armstrong. Anytime that we see that notation "et al." after the
name of one of the grantors/grantees, that should be a madly waving red
flag to us, telling us to check it at once. The "et al." notation - meaning
"and the rest", or, more loosely, "and others", tells us that Elmus
Dooright and others were granting land to Armstrong. The names of the
"others" are very often other members of the grantor/grantee's family. We
also note that the surname Armstrong appears only one time in the list of
deeds, while some of the other surnames appear more than once. That may
mean nothing, or it could be an indication that Elmus Dooright and his
family(siblings) were selling off their individual interests in an
inheritance, and we may find that Armstrong is related, if the deed
language should say, for example, that four members of the Dooright family
were selling off their one-fifth interest in the land - where is the other
one-fifth? The chances are very good that Armstrong(perhaps through his
wife) already owns the other one-fifth, and was buying out the other heirs'
interest in the land.
The deeds-of-gift are important documents(and of course, we would either
order copies of them, or get the film of them, after we returned home,
especially in view of the fact that we must wonder if "E.D." Jackson could
be "Elmus Dooright" Jackson), but given the opportunity to go to only one
item in the List on-site, the "et al" deed would very likely serve us best.
