I found this article in a Aug 2, 1917 edition of the Murray Ledger:
Does anyone on the list know any of these parties?

KILLED IN FIGHT OVER DOG
Smithland, KY, July 28 (1917) -- S P Butler, a farmer, was instandly killed
this afternoon when Mrs Jesse Fleming, said to be a half-breed Indian, cut his
throat from ear to ear. Butler was fighting with (Mr Jesse) Fleming over a
dog. The woman slipped behind while they were clinched. The killing occurred
five miles from Smithland. The two men were brothers-in-law.
