My friends -

Today, we are going to return to the "Tips" series, and to the subset
within that series in which we have been looking at abbreviations which
from the 18th and 19th century which are a bit away from the norm in most
cases. They do not appear often in documents from that 200 year period,
but, when they do, hopefully this will give you a possible idea as to the
meaning of those abbreviations.

In prior posts, we have dealt with a couple of the other letters of the
alphabet. In this segment, we will look at abbreviations which begin with
the letter "L". As time goes along, we will eventually cover the entire
alphabet.

As I mentioned yesterday, I will be departing tomorrow for the Jackson
Purchase. Our Homecoming event begins Friday morning, and I look forward to
seeing, meeting and visiting with those 133+ attendees who will be present.

There will be no data or other posting tomorrow, due to my travel schedule,
but I will have my trusty laptop with me and I will check in again tomorrow
evening from Nashville, TN, where my wife and I will stay overnight and
then proceed on into Murray on Wednesday.

Unusual 18th & 19th Century Abbreviations - Letter "L"

L3 - third lieutenant (often found in military records)

LA - Letters of Administration

Lndrs - Launderess (occasionally seen in census records)

LE - local elder (sometimes seen in church records)

LD - lawful daughter (occasionally seen in court records)

leg - legatee

li - pound (rarely seen after 1800)

LkSm - Locksmith (occasionally seen in census records)

l/o - late of

LR - land record

LS - letter signed (sometimes seen on sealed documents)

Lsgt - Lance Sergeant (occasionally seen in military records)

ltm - at liberty to marry (occasionally seen in legal documents)

LM - lawful money

Lmat - Laundry Matron (occasionally seen in census records)

lodg - lodger/boarder

lbr - Lumber

lab or labr - Laborer
